Jerking on acceleration

Hey all, Noticed some worrying signs from my 2002 Fiat Marea, gasoline engine with about 214k on the clock. It's been stalling at idle, the engine will cut out randomly, there's a drop in power, and the check engine light is on. Also, I've been getting poor fuel economy, the exhaust has a disturbingly strong smell, black smoke pours out when I accelerate, and the car jerks around rather alarmingly. Now, I'm thinking this might be a fuel pump issue. But I'm still hesitant to return to my mechanic after a lousy experience last time around. Anyone had similar symptoms with their car? Keen to know how it went down at your mechanic's - did they fix it first time, or was it a runaround? Any advice or insight would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey there, Noticed something similar on my 2005 Fiat Punto a while back. Same idle stalling, power loss, and the check engine light came on too. The symptoms made me think of a whole lot of issues, but it turned out to be a defective wiring harness/plug. I remember being in the garage, head buried under the hood alongside my mechanic. It was a pretty serious issue as the damaged wiring was affecting the signal between the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and the engine. The worst part was tracing the problem to the wiring harness on the fuel pump. Troubleshooting this involved testing the harness, connectors, and connected devices for any faults. The mech had to replace the whole assembly to finally resolve the situation. So, it might not be a fuel pump issue per se with your ride but could be related to the wiring harness/plug connected to it. Do get it checked, ultimately it's about resolving the issue and enjoying a smooth ride. Good luck.

Hey! Sounds a lot like what I've been facing, cheers for chiming in! It's kind of a relief to know I'm not alone battling these gremlins. The wiring harness/plug hadn't even crossed my mind, to be honest. That's why these communities are bloody lifesavers, aren't they? If it's not too nosy, do you mind sharing how much that fix set you back? Also, has anything else sprung up since that repair? Really appreciate your input. Safe driving!

Hey again, Totally understand where you're coming from. Surprisingly, the fix didn't burn a huge hole in my pocket. Ended up costing 95.00 € for the wiring harness/plug, which in the grand scheme of things isn't all that bad. As far as any other gremlins since that repair, luckily things have gone pretty smoothly. Thought you’d be interested, we did find a fuel pump defect when the mechanic was doing his thing, but guess what, the smart guy got it fixed right up, no big deal, and no more problems since then. Hope this helps and puts you at ease! Good luck sorting your car out and enjoy those smooth rides soon! Drive safe!

Hey again, Good to know that the repair didn't make too much of a dent in your finances. And it's even better to hear that your ride's been treating you well since. Like a weight off my chest, I tell you! Can't thank you enough - definitely going to be pursuing these leads when I finally get the courage to face my mechanic again. And fingers crossed, it all goes as smoothly as yours! Until then, safe journeys, and thanks for the help. If you ever need a hand (not that you'd want advice from someone with a perpetually broken-down car), I'm here! All the best. Cheers!

Let our mechanics help you!
