They had to unscrew the dashboard and the audio system to determine the problem. It turned out to be a cable connected to the audio system. They had to repair some broken cables and put everything back together. It was definitely a serious matter as it took some time and expertise to fix the problem. But don't worry, after the repair both my sat nav and the audio system worked perfectly. So my advice: take the car to the garage. But since then, both the sat nav and the audio system have been running like the old frigate again. The signal error in the audio system that you suspect sounds plausible. The car hasn't been back to the garage since, at least not for the audio system or sat nav! So I would recommend you find a good mechanic and get it sorted out.
