Failure and power loss in Benz '07 Viano: Possible EGR valve problems?

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Shaking while idling

Unsteady engine

Hi guys, my Benz '07 Viano gasoline with 59349 km on the clock is experiencing some problems. The check engine light is on, the engine stops by itself, there is a loss of power, the engine runs rough, the exhaust smell is strong and it shakes when idling. I'm worried that it might be the EGR valve. My last visit to the mechanic was unfortunately a disaster. Has anyone had similar experiences with these symptoms, especially with regard to the EGR valve? How was it with your mechanic? Looking forward to your answers.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my '10 Benz C-Class. It had similar symptoms, especially that rough idle and weird exhaust smell. It turned out that the EGR valve was really the problem. At the garage, they had to clean the valve first, but that didn't improve the condition, so they ended up having to replace it. It was quite an involved job, so I would recommend getting it sorted as soon as possible. It's definitely not a problem to take lightly as it can lead to further damage. Hope this helps you. Regards.

Hey, you, that sounds like a real odyssey with the EGR valve on your C-Class. Can you still remember what the whole repair cost you in the end? And how are things today, have there been any other problems since then or is everything running smoothly again now? Greetings back.

Hey, yes, that was definitely not an easy job with the EGR valve! As for the repair cost, I think it was around €355. It did cost a bit, but since the visit to the mechanic my car has been running perfectly and the previous malfunction in the EGR valve is a thing of the past. Fortunately, there have been no further problems since then. So it's fair to say that all the effort was worth it in the end. Greetings.

Hey, that's reassuring to hear! The cost is quite high, but if it could solve the problem, it's definitely worth every penny. I'll definitely look into it and discuss it with the mechanic. Thanks for your experience report and your advice, it really helps. Best wishes and hopefully always a breakdown-free journey!

In my case it was not the EGR valve, I have problems with the intake manifold that I still have to deal with, but the car drives normally without any problems. I am very satisfied with the Carly app for reading out and support

It's great to hear that your car is running normally despite the intake manifold issue, Maximilian09. However, I would recommend getting it checked out by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Even if the car seems to be running fine, an issue with the intake manifold could potentially lead to more serious problems down the line. After you've had it checked, could you please update us on the progress? Do you have any other questions or concerns?
