Failing Belt Tensioner Causing XJ Diesel Engine Squeal

My 2016 XJ diesel has developed a concerning belt squeal noise and the tensioner pulley seems to be acting up. When the engine is running, the automatic belt tensioner isnt maintaining proper tension, causing inconsistent engine performance. Has anyone dealt with a similar belt tensioner failure on these engines? Looking for insight on the repair process and what parts typically need replacement. Also interested in knowing if this was a straightforward fix at the workshop or if additional components were involved. Would appreciate hearing about repair costs and time required for the fix.

As someone with moderate experience in automobile maintenance, I had a very similar issue with my 2014 XF diesel. The belt squeal symptoms were nearly identical to what you describe. The tensioner pulley was causing inconsistent tension, leading to that distinct squealing noise, particularly during cold starts. After monitoring the engine noise for about a week, I took it to a specialist workshop. The diagnosis revealed a failed belt tensioner assembly. The repair involved replacing both the tensioner and the serpentine belt as a preventive measure. The total repair cost came to 455€, including parts and labor. The job took about 3 hours to complete. Since the repair, the engine performance has returned to normal with no belt squeal issues. The workshop mentioned this is a known wear point that typically shows up around 60-80k miles. To provide more specific guidance for your case, could you share: Current mileage on your XJ, When did the noise first start, Whether the noise changes with engine speed, If you notice any other unusual engine noises This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced and whether you might need additional components checked.

Had the dealer inspect it at my last service at 146913 KM. They confirmed the idler pulley bearing was failing along with the tensioner pulley. When both components showed wear, they recommended replacing the entire belt drive system. The repair actually solved additional engine noise issues I hadnt noticed were developing. The engine performance improvement was noticeable after the fix.

Thanks for sharing those service details. My XF had almost identical mileage (143000 KM) when I encountered these issues. The complete belt drive system replacement turned out to be the right call in my case too. After getting the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and belt replaced together, I noticed the same benefits, the engine runs much smoother now and several minor noises I had gotten used to disappeared. The belt squeal was completely eliminated. The preventive approach of replacing all wear components in the belt drive system at once likely saved money in the long run. These parts tend to wear at similar rates, so changing everything during one service makes sense around the 140-150K mark. Have you noticed any other improvements in engine performance since the repair? In my case, the smoother belt operation seemed to help with cold starts and idle stability.

Thanks for confirming your experience. The comprehensive belt drive system replacement was definitely worth the investment. My entire repair cost came to 890€, which included parts and labor for the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and new serpentine belt. The improvement in engine performance has been significant. What surprised me most was how many small issues were resolved just by addressing the belt drive components. The engine now runs noticeably smoother, especially during cold starts. The belt squeal is completely gone and acceleration feels more responsive. The automobile maintenance schedule at 150000 KM was the perfect timing to catch these wear items. Really appreciate you sharing their similar experiences. Its reassuring to know this is a common maintenance point for these engines, and the fix truly makes a difference in overall engine performance. Will definitely keep monitoring the belt drive system more closely going forward to catch any early warning signs.
