Experiencing Power Loss, Excessive Fuel Consumption, and Black Smoke in a 2013 Pathfinder: Seeking Advice on Suspected Faulty Fuel Level Sensor Issue

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey, I'm having a bit of a problem with my 2013 Pathfinder, Gasoline model. It's exhibiting some weird behavior - black smoke from the exhaust when I accelerate, the engine light is always on, and it randomly shuts off on its own. I'm also noticing a power loss, a shaky engine and jerkiness during acceleration. On top of all this, it's eating up more fuel than usual, there's a potent smell from the exhaust, and it even stalls when idle. I'm suspecting it might be due to a faulty fuel level sensor, but I'd love to hear your feedback or similar experiences you had. How did you manage in your workshop and what was your experience like fixing this type of issue? Any advice to narrow down my troubleshooting would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, - I had a similar issue with my 2011 Murano, another beast from Nissan. Gotta say, it was a real pain dealing with it at first. Just to give you a heads up, I'd say I've got some pretty solid car experience. Ended up in a local workshop that's got good mechanics with Nissan know-how. After some poking around, turns out the culprit was a defective wiring harness/plug - sounds pretty similar to what might be going on with your Pathfinder. In the end, it cost me 95 Euro, definitely worth it for getting the old girl running smooth again. Does your Pathfinder have any specific modifications or past issues I should know about? It'd help me give you more specific advice. Hang in there, we'll figure this out!

Hey, thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I appreciate the insight. My Pathfinder hasn't got any modifications per se, it's pretty stock. The beast has about 193454 KM on the clock, and the last service trip was quite routine, nothing major out of the ordinary, just the usual oil change, filters, and the likes. Your story sounds really relatable, and now I am considering a faulty wiring harness. It's a relief to know that it didn't cost you an arm and a leg in the end. I'll make sure to update you once I've had it checked out. Cheers for the advice!

Hey again. Based on the info you've given and considering that your Pathfinder is pretty much on stock settings, I'd definitely lean towards a wiring issue or a faulty sensor. Considering the mileage of your car, it's not surprising that something like this could crop up. Noticed any oil leaks or poor spark plug performance lately? That might also hint at some engine trouble. I’d suggest having a good, knowledgeable mechanic take a look at it. See if they can perform a diagnostic to identify any potential malfunctioning parts or wires. This might turn out to just be an early sign of a component needing replacement due to normal wear and tear. Also, bear in mind that while the cost for my repair wasn't exorbitant, the cost can change depending on your location and the specific problem at hand. Here's hoping it won't burn too big of a hole in your pocket! Keep us posted on the updates and don't hesitate to throw any more questions my way. Good luck!

Hey, you've been a great help. It's starting to make sense. Yes, there were traces of an oil leak during my last service, but I didn't take it seriously at the time. I haven't noticed anything wrong with the spark plug performance, but I will definitely have it checked now alongside that wiring or sensor issue. Agreed, old girl's got quite a few miles behind her and wear and tear is to be expected. I'll make sure to find a reliable mechanic and get a good diagnostic done. Thanks for the heads-up on the cost variability - I'll brace myself, but at least it helps knowing what I might be getting myself into. You bet I'll keep you in the loop and might come back if I have more questions. You've been a real solid! Cheers!
