Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Issues on 2017 Volvo S90 with Petrol Engine: Seeking Advice

DPF regeneration failure

|

Check engine light on

|

Strong exhaust smell

|

Loss of engine power

Hey everyone, I've been getting some funky symptoms from my 2017 Volvo S90 with a petrol engine and a mileage of about 78,271 KM. Lately, I've seen the check engine light flash up, a noticeable lack of engine power, DPF regeneration failure, and there's an unusual, quite strong exhaust odor. After a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, I've started to suspect there might be an issue with the Exhaust gas temperature sensor. Have any of you experienced something similar with your rides? If so, what was your experience at the mechanic like? Could really use some help here before going to another mechanic. Cheers!

Hey there, Funny you should mention, I had a somewhat similar problem with my 2014 Volvo XC90. Not that I'm a mechanic, but judging from your symptoms...it absolutely sounds like you're facing an Exhaust System Leak. Sadly, it was quite serious for me. I kept getting a single red warning light initially, but over time, it turned into a rather occasional nuisance, then a full-on safety alert. The engine power dipped down considerably, making the drive feel sluggish and the distinct exhaust stink was unbearable sometimes. When I got it checked, guess what? The Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor was damaged and had to be replaced. There was also a need to replace the whole catalyzer (yep, the catalyst inside was wasted which was causing the nasty smell and regeneration failure). Moreover, something they called the lambda probe in my Oxygen sensor also had to be substituted. So, going by my experience, take your car to your mechanic ASAP. I know it's a bummer but catching these things early always helps. Hope this helps and good luck! Stay safe.

Hey! Thanks heaps for sharing your experience. Sounds like we're dealing with similar car woes here. The exhaust smell is driving me nuts! So you replaced the EGT sensor, catalyzer, and lambda probe, huh? Must've been quite a hit on the ol' wallet. Do you remember how much all that set you back? And since you got everything fixed, have you had any more issues pop up or has it been smooth sailing since then? Stay safe out there. Cheers!

Hey, Yeah, not going to lie, it did sting the wallet a bit. Fixing the exhaust system, particularly the parts leaking, cost me around 265 quid. I know it's no small change, but thinking about it in the long run, it was a sound investment, considering the alternative could've been much worse. Since getting the EGT sensor and all those other bits fixed up, it's been like night and day, honestly! No more funky smells, no more warning lights waving at me, and most importantly, no more power dips. It's like I've got my old ride back! So in conclusion, yeah, it's been smooth sailing. More than worth it, considering I've been able to drive in peace since then. Saves you a lot of worry, especially on those longer drives. Stay safe bud, and good luck with fixing your car!

Hey, Really appreciate you taking out time to share all that. Bummer about the bill but glad to hear your car's running smoothly now. 265 quid sounds hefty, but you're right. Worth paying up if it guarantees a long-term solution. No more warnings, power dips, or weird smells sounds like a dream at this point. Well, looks like I've got quite the visit to the mechanic on my hands! Hopefully, mine comes out of it as well as yours did. Thanks again for all the help; you've definitely made me feel more prepared for this mechanic visit. Take care and safe driving to you! Cheers!
