Erratic engine running and high fuel consumption with Ford Freestyle 2005: Possible problems with the camshaft phasing?

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Valve adjustment noise

Weird engine noise

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2005 Ford Freestyle (gasoline engine, approx. 137,969 km run). The check engine light is on and the engine is running rough. There is also a strange noise, noticeable jerking when accelerating and the fuel consumption is high. I also hear a noise that indicates a valve adjustment. Could the problem be related to a faulty camshaft adjustment? Have any of you ever had similar experiences or been to a mechanic in this situation? I didn't have such a great experience at the garage last time. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey, I was in a similar situation with my 2008 Ford Escape. I also had these loud noises and a rough engine running. When reading the fault memory, a camshaft phaser was identified as defective. It was definitely a serious problem and I had to leave my car in the shop for a few days. They had to replace some major parts, including the cam phaser and associated mechanics. So yes, your guess could be correct. Would definitely recommend getting the car checked by a professional as soon as possible before any major damage occurs. Good luck, hope it doesn't get too serious!

Hey, that sounds like a real mess. It's a shame when the car doesn't want to do what you want it to do. Do you remember how expensive the repair was back then? And has anything else come up since then or has the repair held up well so far?

Hey, you're right, it really was a mess. The repair cost me €1260, which is no mean feat, I know. But since I've been to the mechanic, the fault with the camshaft adjustment has been fixed and my car is running smoothly again. Nothing else has come up so far and the repair is holding up well. So it seems that the expensive price was justified. Hopefully you keep your luck and it's not that expensive for you. Good luck!

Thanks for the information, guys. I at least have an idea now and feel a bit more prepared. The experience you shared is really helpful, it gives me at least a little hope. And of course, repairs sometimes cost money... I'll definitely go to the mechanic tomorrow and get it checked out. You're right, it should be repaired before any major damage occurs. I really hope that the problem will be solved soon. Thanks again for your help and advice - you guys are great!
