Erratic engine and power loss in 2007 Toyota Fortuner: Possible causes and solutions

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Shaking while idling

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Hi guys, I have recently experienced some problems with my 2007 Toyota Fortuner gasoline with 235022 kilometers. Last time I was at the garage I had a bad experience, so I'd rather turn to you guys now. Some symptoms are quite worrying right now: the check engine light is on, the engine power has decreased and the engine is running rough. In addition, the car jerks when accelerating and stalls when idling, and it also shakes when idling. I suspect that it has something to do with the fault in the tank ventilation system or with the DMTL valve. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can tell me about your experience at the mechanic? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, sorry to hear you are having such difficulties. I drive a 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser and had similar symptoms some time ago. My car also had the check engine light on and the engine was running rough, just like yours. At the garage they found out that the problem with my car was actually the engine control unit. It was defective and had to be replaced (only in very rare cases). I can tell you, it was not a simple fault. The mechanics had to work on it for a few hours to fix the problem. After the part was replaced, my car ran like new again. I haven't had any further problems since. So it could well be that you have the same problem. Good luck to you and hope your car is running smoothly again soon!

Hey, it's really stupid that your Fortuner has such quirks. I don't have a Toyota myself, but the symptoms look familiar from my old sled. With your Land Cruiser, it sounds like the engine control unit is seriously damaged. Do you remember how much it cost? And whether anything else has been added since then? Thank you and hope that my car might have something more harmless after all!

Hey, sure, I remember that. The damage to the engine control unit on my old Land Cruiser was really steep. It cost me a whopping €1000 to repair the thing. But let me tell you, since then it's been running like a champ again. As far as the tank ventilation system or DMTL valve is concerned, I can reassure you. After my visit to the mechanic, the problem was completely solved. So no more worry lines at this point. I hope it's nothing worse with your car. Keep your fingers crossed!

Hey, boo, 1000€? That's a tidy sum. But if it helps, it's worth it to me. In any case, I'm reassured that nothing came back and that you're happy. I'm going to make an appointment with my trusted mechanic and hope that he finds the problem quickly and fixes it. I'm looking forward to it and will keep you up to date. Thanks again for your support, it has helped me enormously! Have a good day and always have a safe journey!
