Engine running irregularly and indicator light alarm on Renault Scenic 2005

Shaking while idling

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Loud hissing on acceleration

Hello everyone, I have recently noticed some abnormalities in my 2005 Renault Scenic (diesel, approx. 149000 km mileage): The "Check engine" indicator light comes on, the engine does not run smoothly, there is jerking and loud hissing when accelerating. It also vibrated a lot when idling. Just typical symptoms, as if the swirl flap control on the intake manifold was giving up the ghost. Has anyone had similar experiences? How did the workshop visit go? I'm a bit skeptical as I had a bad experience with my last workshop. I would be grateful for any tips or experience reports. Best regards!

Hello, I actually had exactly the same symptoms with my 2008 Renault Megane (gasoline). My swirl flap was actually broken. The thing was, the indicator light came on and off several times, the engine didn't run smoothly either, there was jerking when accelerating and the hissing noise was clearly audible. My car also had strong vibrations when idling. To be honest, it wasn't really a minor issue. The swirl flap had to be replaced. It wasn't a disaster, but it wasn't like you could just ignore it either. After the swirl flap was changed, everything went back to normal. So, don't worry, once the swirl flap is done, your Renault should run smoothly again. I hope this helps you! Greetings!

Hello, thank you very much for your quick reply and helpful experience! My Scenic seems to be really similar to what you experienced with your Megane. That reassures me a little to know that it will get better once the swirl flap is replaced. Can I ask how much the whole thing ended up costing you? And have there been any other problems since then or was it done after that? I would be grateful for any further information! Best regards!

Hi, sure, don't worry, I'm happy to share my experiences! So, my Megane actually had this swirl flap problem. After the appointment with the mechanic, the fault in the swirl flap control on the intake manifold was fixed. The cost was a hefty €865 because the swirl flap was broken and had to be replaced. For better or worse, you have to go through with it. But hey, since then everything has been fine again. No more problems, the car is running smoothly again. So, don't let it upset you too much, your Scenic should run smoothly again afterwards. Good luck and best wishes!

Hi, your report sounds very reassuring to me - would really like to say that your experience gives me hope and confidence! It's a considerable amount of money, but if it's for the good of my Scenic and ultimately solves all the problems, then it's an investment I'm willing to make. I will be contacting a mechanic soon to tackle changing the swirl flap. Thanks for your enlightening words and the extra boost of motivation! All the best to you and your Megane too, and thanks again for the help! Best regards!
