Engine problems with the VW Polo 2016: uneven running, high fuel consumption and illuminated engine control light

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my VW Polo, built in 2016, petrol engine, with 65,432km mileage. My engine just stalls, twitches when starting, runs rough, consumes a lot of fuel and shows a lit check engine light. Somehow it also seems to be losing power. I didn't really have a good feeling during my last visit to the garage, so I'm here to gather your experiences or information. Could this possibly be due to the throttle potentiometer? Have any of you had similar problems and how did the workshops deal with them? Many thanks in advance! Best regards!

Hi, I recognize my own drama with my 2018 VW Golf in your description. I had similar signs - engine failures, the jerking and the check engine light coming on. In the end, it was actually something serious. The injectors on my Golf had to be replaced - according to the garage, this had caused the juddering and increased fuel consumption. Unfortunately, I can't answer your question about the throttle potentiometer, as that wasn't the problem for me. Getting advice from others is always good, but in the end only a thorough diagnosis at the garage can really give the final verdict. Stay tuned and good luck!

Hey, your situation sounds pretty stressful. Your Golf has been through a lot. Do you remember how much you had to pay to repair the injectors? And has your car developed any other faults since then or did everything run smoothly after the repair? Thanks for sharing your experience and for the advice!

Moin, yes, it was definitely a ride, I tell you! I had to fork out quite a bit to replace the injectors back then, but since then my Golf has been running like a champ again, truly amazing. Now for the interesting part: your question about the throttle potentiometer. After your post, I had it checked because I was interested in it myself. And indeed, something had accumulated on the potentiometer track and was apparently burnt. I had to have it fixed for €480, but since then I've had no further complaints - no jerking, no twitching and the check engine light stays off. So I can only advise you to have it checked out, it could be your problem. Keep me posted and hopefully your Polo will start up again soon without any problems. Take care, buddy!

Hi, oh boy, that sounds really nerve-wracking, but it's good to hear that your Golf is now running perfectly again. That gives me hope! I think I'll follow your advice and have the throttle potentiometer checked. The injector thing sounds plausible anyway. Now I just hope that I got the right workshop on the first try. Your story shows once again how incredibly complex the inside of a car can be... Sometimes it makes you wish you were back in the old days when you could do almost everything yourself. Anyway, thank you very much for your help and your openness, it really gave me a better insight and direction. I'll keep you up to date on how things go with my Polo. See you next time and keep your Golf purring! Take care, buddy!

My tiguan 2.0 tdi shows throttle potentiometer error what could it be?

The throttle potentiometer error could be due to a faulty throttle position sensor (TPS). This sensor is responsible for monitoring the throttle position, which is vital for your car's fuel management system. If it's faulty, it can cause issues like poor fuel economy, engine misfires, or stalling. I'd recommend starting with a simple cleaning of the throttle body. If the problem persists, you might need to replace the TPS. Please remember to have a professional mechanic perform these tasks if you're not comfortable doing them yourself. Let us know how it goes.
