Engine problems with Golf Diesel 2008: symptoms and possible EGR valve cause

Strong exhaust smell

|

Shaking while idling

|

Engine shuts off by itself

|

Check engine light on

|

Loss of engine power

|

Unsteady engine

Hi guys, I have a few worries with my Golf Diesel, built in 2008, which now has 189,765 km on it. I didn't have a very good experience with my mechanic last time and wanted to hear your opinions. The engine warning light is on, the engine is stalling, the engine power is reduced and the engine is running rough. There is also a strong smelling exhaust and the car shakes when idling. Could it possibly be related to the EGR valve? Have any of you ever had similar problems and what was your experience?

Hello, I can well understand you, as I had a similar problem with my 2011 Passat Diesel. It looks as if your EGR valve is defective or stuck. The symptoms on my car were pretty similar, including the warning light, the shaking and the strange smell. The problem was definitely the EGR valve. It was replaced and since then everything has been running smoothly again, so it was a serious problem, but fortunately not a catastrophic one. Hope it can be solved just as easily for you!

Hi, thanks for your feedback. It's reassuring to know that you had the same problem and that replacing the EGR valve fixed it. Can you still remember what you had to pay for the repair? And have you had any other problems with your Passat since then?

Hi, I'm glad I could help. I remember this repair very well. It cost me €355 to repair the EGR valve. It was a bit expensive, but since then the problem with the smelly exhaust and the shaking car has actually gone away, and that's the most important thing. Since the visit to the mechanic, the car has been running like a dream and the EGR valve is no longer a problem. All in all, the investment was definitely worth it. I hope it works just as well on your Golf!

Hey, thanks for the info. That really helps me. 355 is a lot of money, but if that's the solution to my problem, then it's worth it. I'm just glad to hear that everything has been fine with your car since then. I have an appointment with another mechanic tomorrow. Hopefully this visit will be a better experience. Thanks again for your advice!

It's good that you have a diagnostic reading pointing to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sensor. Before replacing the sensor, check the wiring and connections to ensure there are no loose or damaged wires, as this could also cause the issue. If everything looks fine, replacing the sensor might be necessary. Let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions!

The error code P0272 typically indicates an issue with cylinder 4's fuel injector circuit. Start by checking the wiring and connections to the injector for any signs of damage or loose connections. If the wiring looks good, the injector itself might need inspection or replacement. Keep me updated on your progress or if you have further questions!
