The engine was running rough and the car was jerking especially when accelerating. Quite similar to what you are experiencing, might sound like the tank breather valve but unfortunately that is not always the case. The solution was actually to clean the hoses and sometimes they even need replacing - it depends on how clogged they are. It is definitely a serious problem as it affects ride comfort and safety.
