Engine light is on and the car only starts with starting gas

Hi, I have a 2006 Renault Kangoo with 200,000 km on the odometer. I've noticed that the check engine light is on, and the car only starts when I use starting fluid. Once it starts, it runs normally. What could be the cause of this, and how can I solve the problem? Thanks for your help!
