Eclipse Cross PHEV: Engine Cuts & Power Loss Mystery

Jerking on acceleration

Hey all, having trouble with my 2020 Eclipse Cross PHEV. The car's acting up with multiple issues, engine cuts out unsual, lacks power, runs rough and jerks during acceleration. Fuel consumption has gone way up too. Check engine light is on. I suspect it might be the throttle valve, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? If so, what was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Really interested in hearing your repair experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had something very similar happen with my 2018 Outlander PHEV. I've got some experience working on cars, but this one stumped me initially. Turned out it was a faulty accelerator pedal module. Had all those same symptoms, jerky acceleration, power loss, and the engine acting weird. Took it to my regular workshop (I trust those guys), and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair cost me around 205 Euro, and it fixed all those issues completely. What's your current mileage? And have you noticed if these issues happen more when the engine is cold or warm? This could help narrow things down, as these Mitsubishi hybrids can be a bit tricky. Also, while my issue was the pedal module, it might be worth checking if you've had any recent software updates. These newer PHEVs sometimes act up after updates. Let me know those details, and I might be able to help more!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 60552 KM, and I just had it serviced last month. The issues seem to happen regardless of engine temperature, which is what's making it extra frustrating. Interesting that you mention the accelerator pedal module, I hadn't considered that. Did your check engine light also come on when you had this problem? I'm gonna take your advice and check about any recent updates, though I don't recall getting any notifications about them. The symptoms you described are spot on with what I'm experiencing. Really hoping it's something relatively simple like in your case!

Hey again! Yeah, my check engine light definitely came on, that was actually one of the first signs something was wrong. The symptoms being constant regardless of engine temp does sound really similar to what I experienced with my Outlander PHEV. I forgot to mention earlier, but before I got it fixed, I also noticed the engine would sometimes have this slight hesitation when I'd try to maintain a steady speed on the highway, almost like it couldn't decide how much power to give. Does that sound familiar to you? 60K km isn't that much really, mine was around 45K when I had the pedal module issue. The funny thing is, my regular mechanic initially thought it was the throttle valve too (like you suspected), but the diagnostic codes pointed to the pedal module instead. One quick thing you could try, disconnect your battery for about 15 minutes and then reconnect it. Sometimes this resets the system and might temporarily improve things. Didn't work permanently for me, but it might give you a clue if it's electrical/sensor related. Keep us posted on what you find out! These PHEVs are great cars when they're running right, but they can be a bit mysterious when things go wrong.

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! Yes, that highway hesitation you mentioned is exactly what I'm experiencing too, it's like the car can't make up its mind about power delivery. Pretty relieving to hear someone else had the same issues and got them sorted. I'll definitely try that battery disconnect trick tonight, and I've already called my mechanic to schedule a check-up. Mentioned the pedal module possibility to him, and he said he'll specifically look into that. Really hoping it's the same straightforward fix you had! Thanks again for taking the time to help out. I'll update the thread once I get it diagnosed and fixed, might help other PHEV owners facing similar issues in the future. Really appreciate your help!
