Eclipse Cross PHEV Nightmare: Engine Stalling & No Start

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Car won't start

Longer cold start time

Hey all, having major issues with my 2022 Eclipse Cross PHEV. Engine's acting up, stalling unsual, hard starts when cold, serious power loss and rough idle. CEL is on and sometimes the car won't start at all. I suspect it's the crankshaft sensor, but wanted to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Any diagnostic tips would be helpful. Thanks!

Hey! Been there with my 2020 Outlander PHEV (also familiar with the newer Eclipse Cross, as my sister has one). I have some experience with hybrids, though I'm not a pro mechanic. Had super similar issues, unusual stalls, rough starts, and that annoying CEL. Took it to my regular workshop, Jim's Auto, and they found it was indeed the crankshaft sensor, specifically the wiring harness was shot. Cost me around 170€ to fix, including labor. They replaced the connector and harness, and it's been running like a charm since then. What's your mileage and service history? Also, are you getting any specific error codes? This info would help pinpoint if you're dealing with the same issue I had. The PHEV systems can be tricky, so I'd definitely recommend getting it checked by a Mitsubishi-certified shop if possible!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Eclipse Cross is at 72012 KM and just had its service done last month. I've been getting error code P0335, which seems to match what you described. Really helpful to know about the wiring harness, that's way better than having to replace the entire sensor unit. I was worried it might be something more serious with the hybrid system. Think I'll take it to the dealership since they're familiar with these PHEVs. Did your repair take long? Just trying to plan around it.

Hey again! Yeah, glad I could help with my experience. Actually, my repair was pretty quick, the whole thing took about 2.5 hours at the shop. With your Eclipse Cross showing the same P0335 code I had, it's looking more and more like we had the identical issue. Just to share more about my repair experience, once they found it was the wiring harness, it was pretty straightforward. My Outlander PHEV had about 65,000 KM when this happened, so pretty close to where you're at. The dealership is definitely your best bet, my sister's Eclipse Cross had some minor issues last year, and the Mitsubishi guys knew exactly what they were doing with the hybrid system. One tip though, while they're at it, have them check the connector housing too. In my case, there was a bit of corrosion building up there, and they cleaned that out as part of the fix. That might have contributed to the whole problem in the first place. Let me know how it goes! Always curious to hear if others with similar Mitsubishi PHEVs have the same experiences.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's super reassuring about the repair time, 2.5 hours isn't bad at all. I'll definitely mention the connector housing to them too; better to get everything checked while they're in there. Just booked an appointment with the dealership for next Tuesday morning. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's helped calm my nerves about the whole situation. Will let you know how it turns out, but feeling much more confident now that it's probably just the wiring harness. Fingers crossed it'll be a quick fix like yours was!
