Eclipse Cross Overheating + CEL: Thermostat Warning Signs?

Overheating

Check engine light on

Hey everyone, got a bit of a situation with my 2021 Eclipse Cross (diesel, 99k km). The engine's running hot and the check engine light just came on. I'm thinking it might be the thermostat, but my last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their Eclipse? Would love to hear about your experiences and if you can recommend a reliable mechanic who's familiar with Mitsubishis. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had a similar issue with my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel last summer. Initially thought it was just the thermostat too, but it turned out to be more complex. The main problem was damage to the wiring harness that connects to the cooling fan control module. Some wires had worn through from rubbing against the engine components. When I took it to the garage, they found that the damaged wiring was causing the cooling fan to work intermittently, which led to the engine overheating and triggering the check engine light. The repair involved replacing the damaged section of the harness and securing it properly to prevent future wear. It was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention to prevent engine damage. Based on your symptoms, I'd suggest getting it checked soon, overheating isn't something you want to ignore. I now go to a specialist workshop across town. They know these engines inside out, and they actually found the wiring issue that my previous mechanic missed. Hope this helps with your decision.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness, definitely something I'll have them check out. Hey, if you don't mind me asking, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smooth since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Cheers!

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting my Outlander fixed at that specialist workshop, everything's been running like a dream. The total bill came to 170€ for sorting out the wiring harness, which honestly wasn't as bad as I'd feared. They also spotted and fixed the coolant thermostat malfunction while they were at it, which was definitely part of the problem too. It's been about 8 months now, and I haven't had a single issue with overheating or any warning lights coming back on. The engine's running at normal temps, and the cooling system's working exactly as it should. Honestly, it was such a relief to get it properly diagnosed and fixed, totally worth going to a specialist who knows what they're looking for. Just make sure whoever looks at yours checks both the wiring and the thermostat. Sometimes these things are connected, as I found out! Let me know how you get on with yours

Thanks! Really appreciate all the info. Just got back from the mechanic you recommended and wanted to give you an update. You were spot on about going to a specialist, they found similar issues with my wiring, plus a small coolant leak I didn't even know about. Bill came to about 200€, bit more than yours but they had to replace some extra parts. The whole experience was actually pretty smooth. The mechanics walked me through everything they were doing, which was a nice change from my last garage. They even showed me the worn-out parts they replaced. Car's running perfectly now, no more overheating or warning lights. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. Definitely keeping these guys as my go-to mechanics from now on. Really saved me from what could've been a much bigger headache! Cheers!
