Eclipse Cross Hybrid Shakes & Jerks: Bad Throttle Valve?

Jerking on acceleration

|

Check engine light on

|

Shaking while idling

Hey all, my 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Hybrid (102k km) is giving me headaches lately. The car trembles pretty badly at idle, jerks when I hit the gas, and the CEL is lit up. I'm thinking it might be the throttle valve, but my last mechanic experience wasn't great, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your experiences and maybe get some recommendations for reliable mechanics who know their way around Mitsubishi hybrids. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had nearly identical issues with my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV last year at around 90k km. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, rough idle, jerky acceleration, and the check engine light. Initially thought it was the throttle body too, but it turned out to be a faulty accelerator pedal position sensor. Took it to the dealership after my regular mechanic couldn't properly diagnose it. The technician found that the electronic module in the accelerator pedal was failing, causing incorrect signals to the engine management system. It was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention since it affected basic drivability and could've led to worse problems. The fix involved replacing the entire accelerator pedal assembly with a new unit. This sorted out all the symptoms, smooth idle returned, no more jerky acceleration, and the CEL cleared up. Haven't had any similar issues since then. If you're in this situation, I'd strongly recommend going to a Mitsubishi certified dealer, specifically one with hybrid experience. These electronic throttle issues need proper diagnostic equipment to accurately identify the problem. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's super helpful to know it was the accelerator pedal sensor. Do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? I'm trying to get a sense of what I might be looking at cost-wise and whether it's likely to solve all my issues in one go.

Hey again! Glad my previous response was helpful! Yeah, I got my car fixed at the Mitsubishi dealer about 7 months ago, and I can tell you exactly what it cost me, €265.00 for replacing the accelerator pedal module. The mechanic found it was definitely the throttle valve acting up, just as I suspected, and they sorted it out properly. Since the repair, my car's been running like a dream, no more jerking, no weird vibrations at idle, and the check engine light has stayed off. It's honestly like having a new car again! The acceleration is smooth as butter now, and I haven't had a single issue pop up since then. I'd say it was money well spent, especially considering how much smoother and more reliable the car feels now. I was a bit worried it might be something more serious (and expensive!), but this fix took care of everything in one go. If your symptoms are similar to what I had, you're probably looking at a similar repair cost, and based on my experience, it should solve all those issues you're having. Let me know how it goes if you get it checked out!

Thanks a lot for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from the Mitsubishi dealer you inspired me to visit. You were spot on about getting it properly diagnosed, turns out it was indeed the throttle valve in my case. Cost me a bit more, around €320, but totally worth it! The whole experience was surprisingly smooth. Dropped it off in the morning, and they had it fixed by afternoon. The mechanic there really knew his stuff and explained everything clearly. The best part? The car feels completely different now, no more shaking at idle, and the acceleration is super smooth. Even that annoying check engine light is finally gone! Really appreciate your advice about going to the dealer. Was definitely the right call, even if it meant spending a bit more. Feels great to have the car running properly again. Thanks again for helping me make the right decision!
