Eclipse Cross Battery Issues: Dim Lights & Starting Problems

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hey everyone, my 2019 Eclipse Cross Hybrid has been acting up lately. The lights are dimming/flickering, and I'm having trouble starting the car due to what seems like a weak battery. I suspect it might be related to the battery temperature sensor, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'm particularly interested in hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. What did your mechanic find and fix? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2017 Outlander PHEV last winter. I've got some experience working on cars (though I'm not a pro mechanic), and this one had me worried too. Saw those exact same symptoms, flickering lights and starting problems. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it as a faulty battery temperature sensor. Cost me about 315 Euro to get it sorted, but it's been running perfectly since then. The sensor is crucial for the hybrid system's proper functioning. Before I share more specific details about my repair experience, what's your current mileage, and have you noticed any warning lights on the dash? Also, how long have you been experiencing these issues? Since we've got similar Mitsubishi hybrids, I might be able to give you more relevant info. Side note: My sister actually has a 2020 ASX, and it's interesting how similar some of these hybrid system components are across the Mitsubishi line.

Thanks for the detailed reply! My mileage is currently at 94902 KM, and I just had my service done last month. The issues started about two weeks ago, and yes, I've noticed the battery warning light occasionally flashing, especially during cold starts. It's a bit concerning since I rely on this car for my daily commute. Did your repair require any specific parts to be ordered, or was it a relatively quick fix? Love how helpful this community is!

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, I totally get your concern, I remember being worried about my commute when this happened to my Outlander PHEV too. So about your question, in my case, it wasn't exactly a quick fix because they had to order the specific sensor from Mitsubishi. Took about 4-5 days to get the part. The actual repair only took about 2 hours once they had everything, but the waiting for the part was the annoying bit. I had similar mileage to yours when it happened (around 98,000 KM). The flashing battery warning light is exactly what I experienced too! It's actually good that you mentioned it because it confirms what I suspected. One thing I learned from my experience, don't wait too long to get it fixed. I tried to "ride it out" for a few weeks, and it just got worse, especially during cold mornings. Quick tip: while you're waiting for the repair, try to park in a garage if possible. I noticed the symptoms were way worse when my car was exposed to cold temperatures overnight. Let me know how it goes with the repair! I'm curious if your experience will be similar to mine.

Thanks so much for all this helpful information! I'll definitely take your advice about not waiting too long, I've already called my local Mitsubishi dealer and scheduled an appointment for next week. Really appreciate the tip about garage parking too; I've got access to covered parking at work, so I'll start using that instead of the outdoor lot. I'm actually relieved to hear that once you got the part, the repair itself wasn't too lengthy. I'll make sure to ask them to order the sensor in advance if possible, so I don't have to wait around too long. It's so reassuring to know someone else went through the same thing and got it sorted out successfully. Thanks again for sharing your experience, you've really helped put my mind at ease about this whole situation!
