Dying Infiniti EX: Starting Issues & Engine Stalls

Car won't start

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey there! Need some advice for my '08 Infiniti EX (223k km). Having serious starting issues lately engine either won't start or unusually dies while driving. Dashboard warning light is on too. My mechanic suggested it might be the water sensor, but after a bad experience with them last time, I'd like to hear from others. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and where did you get it fixed? Thanks in advance!

Hey! I can relate to this. Had a similar issue with my '05 Infiniti FX35 last summer. At first, it would stall unusually, then got worse with starting problems. The dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. Took it to my regular mechanic, turned out to be a faulty crankshaft position sensor with damaged wiring. The sensor cable connection was corroded and had some breaks in it. It was causing incorrect signals to the ECU, making the engine cut out unpredictably. My fix involved replacing both the sensor and the wiring harness section. Not a complex repair, but definitely needed proper diagnostic equipment to confirm. It was more about precise work than heavy repairs. Haven't had any issues since then. Your symptoms sound really similar to what I experienced. I'd suggest getting a second opinion from another Infiniti specialist, as sensor issues can be tricky to diagnose correctly.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the crankshaft sensor sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, just curious if you've had any other electrical gremlins pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Glad to jump back in and update you on my FX35 situation! Actually, I just want to clear up something while I initially thought it was the crankshaft sensor, it turned out to be a water sensor malfunction after all. Just got it properly diagnosed and fixed last week. The mechanic found a defective cable connection that was causing all those problems I mentioned. The total repair came to 365€ not cheap, but definitely worth it since the car's running like a dream now. No more unusual stalling or starting issues, and my dashboard is finally back to normal (no more light show!). And to answer your question about other electrical issues nope, everything's been smooth sailing since the repair. It really was just that one faulty sensor connection causing all the drama. If your symptoms are similar, might be worth getting your water sensor checked out first. Hope this helps with your decision-making! Let me know if you need any other details about my experience.

Thanks so much for the update! That's actually a relief to hear it was the water sensor exactly what my mechanic suspected. The price sounds reasonable too, especially considering how much trouble these issues can cause. You know what? I actually just got back from a different mechanic today. Took your advice about getting a second opinion, and am I glad I did! The new guy was much more thorough with the diagnostics. Same issue as yours water sensor and some wonky wiring. Got it all fixed up for about 380€. The car's running perfectly now no more surprise shutdowns or starting problems. What a relief! Really appreciate you sharing your experience helped me feel more confident about getting it sorted. Sometimes it just takes someone else's similar story to point you in the right direction, right? Thanks again for all your help! Time to enjoy my properly functioning car again!
