Dodge Caravan Starting Issues: Switch Failure Alert

My Caravan is acting weird lately, when I turn the ignition key, sometimes the engine starts rough and occasionally shuts off completely. Other times, it wont start at all. Seems like an ignition switch issue to me. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their van? Really want to avoid another costly repair shop visit after my last bad experience. Running a 2018 Dodge Caravan with 77203km on the clock. Any tips or shared experiences would be great.

Had the same symptoms with my 2015 Dodge Journey. The rough engine start pattern you describe matches my experience exactly. Initially thought it was the ignition switch too, but it turned out to be a combination of issues. The starter motor was intermittently failing, causing those inconsistent starts. A dashboard light would occasionally flash, but not consistently enough to pinpoint the problem. The mechanic found that the ignition coil was also deteriorating, which explained the rough running when the engine did start. This setup required professional diagnosis since multiple systems were involved. While checking the systems, they also found a blown fuse connected to the ignition circuit. The entire starting system needed attention, not just a simple fix. This kind of starting issue usually indicates a serious electrical problem that can worsen if left unchecked. In my case, waiting longer would have likely left me stranded somewhere with a complete failure of the starting system. Worth getting it checked soon, especially given the similarity in symptoms and vehicle age. These problems typically dont resolve themselves and can lead to more extensive damage to the electrical system.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had almost identical problems with my Caravan last winter when the car ignition started acting up. The car electronics were failing intermittently, just like you described. The mechanic found faulty wiring in addition to a bad ignition switch. Would you mind sharing how much the repairs cost in your case? Also curious if youve had any other issues since getting it fixed. My repair was about 6 months ago and so far the key turn has been smooth, but always good to know what to watch out for.

Had my repair done recently and everything works perfectly now. When I turn the key, the engine starts smoothly every time, such a relief after those stressful intermittent failures. The total bill came to 52€ for replacing the defective fuse in the ignition circuit. Once they fixed that, all the electrical gremlins disappeared. The ignition switch and starter motor were actually fine, just not getting proper power due to the blown fuse. No issues at all in the past few months. The key turn is consistent, and the engine start is reliable regardless of weather conditions. Looking back, the erratic behavior was definitely nerve-wracking, but the fix turned out to be simpler than expected. If your repair included addressing the faulty wiring, you should be good to go. These electrical issues rarely come back once properly fixed, especially when the ignition coil and related components get a thorough check during diagnosis.

After reading through your helpful replies, I wanted to share how my repair journey ended. Finally took the Caravan to my local mechanic last week when the engine start problems got worse. The diagnostic showed the starter motor had developed a fault in its solenoid, and there was corrosion building up on the car electronics connectors. Total repair came to 380€ including a new starter and cleaning all connection points in the ignition system. The experience was actually pretty positive this time. Mechanic showed me the corroded parts and explained why the key turn was becoming unreliable. Been driving for 5 days now and the engine starts perfectly every time, no more rough starts or sudden shutoffs. Much better outcome than my last repair shop visit. Thanks for encouraging me to get it checked out before it left me stranded somewhere. Definitely worth the cost for peace of mind.

Error, engine control light comes on, fault cannot be cleared. Automatic light also fails, but it works manually
