Discussing Dim or Flickering Lights and Weak Battery Issues in 2001 Kia Retona Gasoline Engine

Weak battery when starting the engine

Dim or flickering lights

Hey all, I've got a bit of a puzzler with my 2001 Kia Retona Gasoline engine. Lately, the lights have been either dim or flickering and I've been having trouble with a weak battery when I try to start the engine. I'm suspecting a battery sensor error but would love some input. Has anyone else encountered this issue and how did your mechanic resolve it? Any advice is appreciated.

Hey there! Can totally understand your confusion. I've got a 1999 Kia Sportage and faced a similar issue before. Now, I've got some experience with cars, not an expert by any means, but I've had my fair share of garage visits. In my case, the problem ended up being a microprocessor in the battery sensor that was busted. My mechanic fixed it and it cost me about 315 Euro. Pretty odd, right? Hope this helps a bit, but could you share some more details about your vehicle? Specifically, any changes you've noticed in the charging system? That could really help me give you a more accurate advice.

Hey! Thanks for the reply. Well, my Retona's got about 138140 KM on it and I've never really noticed any charging system specific issues until now. Freaky, I last serviced it a couple of months back. The mechanic didn't say anything about the sensor. You'd think he'd catch something like that, right? I guess I might have to get it checked again. But really appreciate your insight, cheers!

Hey! Good to hear back. Yeah, you're right, it does sound a bit unexpected. It's weird that the mechanic didn't catch something like that, especially if the issue's with the sensor. In my case, I only noticed the sensor issue when my Sportage started having the same symptoms as your Retona. Given your Retona's mileage and recent service, another thing that might be worth asking your mechanic could be about the alternator. In some cases, a faulty alternator could also cause dimming or flickering lights and lead to weak battery when you start the engine. I had a similar issue with my previous car, a Nissan Juke. Alternator replacement wasn't as hefty as the sensor issue - came around 200 Euro. Just something you may want to look into as you're sorting out this puzzle. Maybe give it a try asking about these from your mechanic could help identify the real culprit. Keep us posted about any updates, and fingers crossed it's an easy fix for you! Cheers!

Hey, thanks for the invaluable advice! I hadn't considered the alternator at all, but it definitely sounds like it's worth investigating. I'll be sure to ask my mechanic about it. You're right, it's all just a puzzle and I gotta hunt for the missing pieces. And trust me, fingers are crossed indeed for an easy fix. I'll be sure to let you guys know the outcome. Really appreciate the help cheers!
