Discovery Wipers & Washers Dead, Switch Issue?

Headlight cleaning system without function

|

Wipers don't work properly

Hi everyone! Having trouble with my 2002 Discovery (petrol). The windshield wipers stopped working, and the headlight washers aren't functioning either. I suspect it might be the wiper switch causing both issues. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Interested in hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance.

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars (not a pro, but I've dealt with my share of issues). Had a similar problem with my 2004 Range Rover (also had issues with a Defender). The symptoms were exactly the same, wipers and washers stopped working completely. Turned out it was a faulty steering column switch cable connection. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair cost me around 155 Euro, but it fixed both issues completely. What's the mileage on your Discovery? And have you noticed any other electrical issues? This info would help figure out if you're dealing with the same problem. Quick heads-up, if it is the same issue, don't wait too long to fix it. These electrical problems can sometimes get worse and affect other systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Disco has 152119 KM on the clock, and everything else electrical seems to be working fine. Had the last service about 3 months ago, and there were no warning signs before this happened. Just suddenly stopped working yesterday. Your experience sounds really similar to what I'm dealing with. Good to know it might be the column switch connection, that's actually a bit of a relief since I was worried it might be something more serious (and expensive!). I'll get it checked out ASAP. Did you notice any warning signs before yours completely failed?

Hey again! Glad to help further with your Discovery issue. Actually, thinking back to when I had this problem with my Range Rover, there weren't really any obvious warning signs before the complete failure. Just like yours, it was pretty much working fine one day and dead the next! That's pretty typical with these electrical gremlins. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before taking it to the workshop, I did try checking the fuses (you know, the obvious stuff first), but they were all good. Just thought I'd mention that in case you want to save some time. The mileage on your Disco is pretty similar to what mine had when this happened (I was around 160000 km). These column switches are known to act up around this age. And since you're saying everything else electrical is working fine, I'm even more convinced it's the same issue I had. Just keep in mind that if you do get it fixed, make sure they check the connections properly. My mechanic showed me that sometimes these cables can look fine but have tiny breaks inside the insulation. That's why mine failed without any warning. Let us know how it goes when you get it checked out!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! Really helpful to know about the fuses too, I actually haven't checked them yet, so I'll do that before taking it to the shop. Might save me some diagnostic time and money! It's quite reassuring that your experience was so similar, especially with the mileage being close to mine and the sudden failure without warning. I've booked it in at a workshop for tomorrow morning, didn't want to risk waiting too long after what you mentioned about electrical issues potentially spreading. I'll definitely make sure they check those cable connections thoroughly. Good tip about the hidden breaks in the insulation, I wouldn't have thought to ask about that. I'll update the forum once I know what the actual problem was. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!
