Discovery Gear Display Dead, Clutch Switch Issue?

Gear selection display in the speedometer without function

|

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hi all! Having troubles with my 2013 Land Rover Discovery (gas engine). The gear selection display on the speedometer isn't working at all, and there's a warning light that's come on. I suspect it might be related to the clutch pedal switch, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would really appreciate if you could share your repair experiences and workshop solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working with cars, and funny enough, I had a similar issue with my 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (gas). The symptoms were exactly the same, gear display not working and warning light on. Turned out it was indeed the clutch switch connection that was causing the trouble. Took it to my regular workshop and they found a faulty cable connection to the clutch switch. The repair cost me around 95 Euro, mostly labor since the part itself wasn't expensive. The mechanic showed me that the connection had corroded over time, causing intermittent signal issues. They replaced the cable and cleaned the connector area, which solved the problem completely. Before I can share more specific advice, how many miles/kilometers are on your Discovery? Did this issue start suddenly or gradually? Are you experiencing any other symptoms, like difficulty shifting gears?

Hey, thanks for the detailed response! My Discovery has 82695 KM on the clock and I just had a general service done last month. The issue actually started gradually, first the display would flicker occasionally, then it completely stopped working about a week ago. Haven't noticed any problems with shifting gears though. Based on what you're describing about the corroded connection, that could definitely be what's happening with mine too. It's good to know it might not be too expensive to fix. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair typically takes? I'd love to get this sorted quickly if it's a similar issue.

Hey again! Yeah, when you mention the flickering display before it completely failed, that's exactly how mine started too! Definitely sounds like the same issue I had with my Range Rover Sport. The repair itself didn't take long at all, my mechanic had it done in about an hour. They basically had to access the clutch pedal area, disconnect the old cable, clean up the connector points, and install the new one. Pretty straightforward job, really. Since your mileage is pretty similar to what mine was when this happened (I was around 85000 KM), and you're seeing the same progression of symptoms, I'd bet money it's the same problem. The fact that you're not having any gear shifting issues is also a good sign, that's exactly how mine was. Quick tip though, while they're in there, have them check the surrounding wiring as well. My mechanic did this and found a couple of other cables that were starting to show early signs of wear. Didn't replace them at the time, but it was good to know I might need to keep an eye on them. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out! Always happy to help a fellow Land Rover owner.

Thanks so much for all this helpful info! Really puts my mind at ease knowing it's likely a straightforward fix. Great tip about checking the surrounding wiring too, definitely going to mention that when I take it in. I'll book it into the workshop tomorrow since it sounds like it won't take too long to fix. The fact that your symptoms were identical and it turned out to be a simple cable issue is super reassuring. I was worried it might be something major with the transmission! Will let you know how it goes, but feeling much more confident now about getting it sorted. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!
