Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey all, need help with my 2015 Discovery! Engine's acting up badly, black smoke, constant stalling, jerking during acceleration, and really poor fuel efficiency. Check engine light is on and there's a strong exhaust smell. I suspect fuel system issues but can't pinpoint the exact problem. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it fixed? Any insights would be super helpful.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I actually dealt with similar symptoms on my 2013 Range Rover Sport (also had a 2017 Velar). Had the same nightmare, black smoke, stalling, the whole package. Turned out to be a faulty sensor cable and damaged plug in the fuel injection system. My mechanic spotted it during diagnosis, the cable was worn out and causing all those issues. Total fix was 95 Euro, mostly labor costs for replacing the cable and plug. Before I can give you more specific advice, could you share: Have you scanned for error codes? When did these symptoms first start? Any recent maintenance or repairs? Might be dealing with the same thing here, but let's get more details to be sure!

Thanks for sharing your experience! We might be looking at something similar here. On my Discovery with 137867 KM, I've had it serviced regularly but these issues just started last week. Got it scanned yesterday and got error codes P0172 and P0175, pointing to a rich fuel mixture condition. The symptoms you described with your Range Rover sound really familiar. Gonna take it to my mechanic tomorrow, good to know about the sensor cable and plug being potential culprits. That's way better than what I was imagining cost-wise! Have you had any repeat issues since getting yours fixed? Mine's been super reliable until now, so hoping it's something similarly straightforward.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up about your Discovery. Yeah, since fixing that sensor cable and plug on my Range Rover Sport, it's been running like a dream, no repeat issues at all! Those error codes you got (P0172 and P0175) definitely confirm what I suspected. My Sport had the same P0172 code when all this happened. The rich fuel mixture issue makes total sense with all those symptoms we both experienced, especially that nasty black smoke and the poor fuel economy. Actually, seeing those codes makes me even more confident it's the same problem I had. The sensor cable issue causes the engine computer to get wrong readings, making it dump too much fuel into the mixture. That's why we both got that black smoke and awful fuel economy. One tip though, while my fix was pretty cheap, have your mechanic check the oxygen sensors too while they're at it. I didn't mention it before, but I actually had them do that during my repair just to be safe. They were fine in my case, but it's worth checking since they're part of the same system. Keep me posted on what your mechanic finds! Always good to compare notes with another Land Rover owner dealing with similar issues.

Here's how I would end the conversation from's perspective: Thanks so much for the detailed advice! Really appreciate you mentioning the oxygen sensors too, I'll definitely have them check those while they're looking at everything. It's such a relief to hear you haven't had any issues since getting it fixed. Will let you know what they find tomorrow, fingers crossed it's just that sensor cable like yours! Amazing how something relatively small can cause so many scary symptoms. You've really helped put my mind at ease about this whole situation. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience! This completion makes sense because it: Acknowledges the helpful advice, Shows appreciation for the extra tip about oxygen sensors, Expresses relief about the potential simple fix, Promises to provide updates, Maintains the informal, friendly tone of the conversation, Stays consistent with's previous communication style
