Discovery Diesel Heater Problems? Common Fixes Inside

Insufficient Cooling/Heating

|

Blower does not work properly

Anyone dealt with heating issues on a 2018 Discovery Diesel? My blower's acting up and cabin temperature control isn't working right. Pretty sure it's the electric auxiliary heater, but looking for confirmation before heading to the workshop. What fixes worked for you and what was the actual problem in your case?

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars (not a pro, but I've dealt with my share of issues). Actually had a similar problem with my 2020 Range Rover Velar diesel, sounds pretty close to what you're describing. The symptoms were exactly like yours, and yep, it turned out to be a faulty electric auxiliary heater. Took it to my regular workshop, and they confirmed it after running diagnostics. Had to fork out 350 Euro for the fix, but it sorted the heating issues completely. Mind sharing some more details about your Discovery? Like when did you first notice the problem, and does it happen all the time or just occasionally? Also, have you noticed any warning lights on the dash? This would help me tell if you're dealing with the same issue I had. BTW, I learned that this is somewhat common in Land Rover diesels, including the Defender too. The sooner you get it checked, the better, don't want to be stuck without heat!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Dealing with the same headache on my 2018 Discovery Diesel (151179 KM). The issue started about two weeks ago, and it's pretty constant, mostly notice it during morning starts. No warning lights yet, but the cabin just won't warm up properly, and the blower seems to have a mind of its own. Had my last service about 3 months ago, and everything was fine then. Good to know about your experience with the electric auxiliary heater, that's exactly what I suspected. Might bite the bullet and get it checked out this week. Did your workshop have to order any special parts, or was it a pretty straightforward fix?

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your Discovery. Yeah, looking at your mileage and symptoms, it's even more similar to what I dealt with on my Velar. In my case, the workshop did have to order the auxiliary heater unit, took about 2 days to arrive. The fix itself was pretty straightforward though, took them about 3 hours total. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before the complete failure, I also noticed the heating was really inconsistent during morning starts, just like you're experiencing now. Something I learned from my experience, might be worth checking your fuses first. Originally thought my blower issues were totally down to the auxiliary heater, but turned out a blown fuse was part of the problem too. It's a simple check you could do yourself before heading to the workshop. Just a heads up, if it is the auxiliary heater, you might want to ask them to check the wiring harness while they're at it. Mine had some minor wear that could've caused problems later on. Better to sort it all at once, you know? Keep me posted on what you find out! Would be interesting to see if it's the same issue I had with my Velar.

That's super helpful info, especially about checking the fuses first! I'll definitely take a look at those before booking the workshop appointment. Really appreciate the tip about the wiring harness too, wouldn't have thought to ask about that. Your Velar experience sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with now. I'll probably give my workshop a heads-up about potentially needing to order parts, so they can get that sorted before I bring it in. Hopefully, they can get it all fixed in one go. Thanks again for all the detailed advice, definitely feeling more confident about tackling this now. Will update you once I get it sorted. Funny how these Land Rovers all seem to have similar quirks, right?
