Dignity's Dead Wipers: Switch Problem or Something Else?

Wipers don't work properly

|

Headlight cleaning system without function

Hey all! Having issues with my 2000 Mitsubishi Dignity where both wipers and headlight washers stopped working. I suspect it might be the wiper switch, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar problems on their Dignity? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Any tips or workshop recommendations would be great!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 1998 Mitsubishi Sigma (just a bit older than your Dignity). I have some experience working on cars, mainly basic maintenance stuff. My wipers and washers stopped working completely one day. Took it to my trusted mechanic, Mike's Auto, and it turned out to be a faulty steering column switch cable connection. The repair cost me around 155€, but it fixed the problem completely. They had to replace some wiring and restore the connection. Before I can share more specific advice, Have you noticed any other electrical issues? Does the problem happen all the time or intermittently? Do you hear any clicking sound when operating the switches? Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing that info! Mine started acting up about 2 weeks after my latest service. My mileage is at 133525 KM, and yeah, I'm getting an intermittent clicking sound when I try to use the wipers. No other electrical issues so far though. Everything else works fine. Funny you mention Mike's Auto, I've been wondering about them. Would you say they're good with these older Mitsubishi models? I'd rather get it fixed by someone who knows what they're doing since these Dignities can be a bit tricky to work on.

Hey again! Thanks for those details about your Dignity. Yeah, that clicking sound you're hearing is exactly what I experienced with my Sigma before things completely stopped working. Given that it started after your service, I wonder if something got knocked loose during the maintenance. I can definitely vouch for Mike's Auto, they really know their stuff with older Mitsubishis. Been taking my Sigma there for the past 5 years, and they've never let me down. When they fixed my wiper issue, they even showed me exactly what was wrong and explained everything. Trust me, they're familiar with the quirks of these models. With your mileage being similar to what mine was when I had the issue (mine was around 140,000 KM), it's probably the same problem, that faulty steering column switch connection. It's a pretty common wear-and-tear thing on these models. Quick tip though, if you decide to go to Mike's, mention the clicking sound specifically. That'll help them pinpoint the issue faster. They might even be able to give you a better price than what I paid, since they've done quite a few of these repairs now. Let me know how it goes if you get it checked out! Always interested in hearing about fellow Mitsubishi owners' experiences.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! You've definitely convinced me about Mike's Auto, I'll give them a call tomorrow morning to set up an appointment. It's really reassuring to hear they've dealt with similar issues before, especially with these older Mitsubishis. The fact that they take time to explain things is a huge plus for me. The clicking sound being similar to what you experienced makes me feel better about getting it checked out sooner rather than later. Don't want it to completely fail while I'm driving! I'll make sure to mention the clicking sound when I talk to them. Really appreciate your help and advice on this, it's exactly what I was hoping to learn when I posted here. I'll definitely update you once I get it sorted out!
