Difficulties with Toyota Fortuner Diesel 2023: Pre-glow light, black smoke and failed DPF regeneration

Hey guys, I'm having problems with my 2023 Toyota Fortuner diesel with 132,582 km mileage. The preglow light won't go out, there is black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, cold starts take longer, the car won't start, fuel efficiency is poor and DPF regeneration is failing. I suspect this could be due to a faulty glow plug, but am unsure after my last bad experience at the mechanic. Has anyone had similar problems and how was this solved at your garage? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2023 Toyota Fortuner diesel is experiencing issues such as a persistent pre-glow light, black smoke during acceleration, a check engine light, prolonged cold starts, failure to start, poor fuel efficiency, and failed DPF regeneration. These problems may be linked to a faulty glow plug. A similar case was resolved by replacing the defective glow plug, which restored normal vehicle operation and eliminated the black smoke. The solution suggests that addressing the glow plug issue could potentially resolve the problems.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2021 Toyota Hilux. Just like you, the pre-glow light was constantly on and the car had difficulty starting, especially in cold weather. I had also noticed black smoke and a steady drop in fuel efficiency. My mechanic read the fault code and found that the glow plug was faulty. Using a special tool, he was able to remove the faulty glow plug and fit a new one. The bad thing about such a case is that, if you're unlucky, the glow plug can break off, which can then lead to a major repair. Fortunately, he was able to replace the glow plug in my car without any problems. Once the new glow plug was fitted, the car ran as normal again. Although it was a frustrating problem, the actual repair was quite straightforward. After the repair, there was no more black smoke and the car ran smoothly again. I hope it goes just as well for you. Good luck with it!

Hey, thanks for your reply and info. Glad to hear your car is back on the road. Can you remember how much it cost you at the garage? And have you had any problems with your Toyota since the change, or has everything gone well?

Hey, of course I remember the cost. The defective glow plug, caused by wear and tear, cost me a total of €560 to have it replaced in the workshop. But since the mechanic did it, everything has been great. No more problems with my Toyota, it's humming like a kitten. I hope this helps you and you're as lucky as me!

Hey, thanks for all the info and your help! It definitely gives me a better idea of what to expect when I go to the garage. It's reassuring to hear that the Toyota ran smoothly after the repair. I hope my mechanic has the same good touch! Thanks again, and all the best for your Toyota!
