Difficulties with the 2014 Toyota 4Runner: Check engine light, black smoke and starting problems

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

DPF regeneration failure

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Longer cold start time

Hey guys, I need some advice. I'm a bit worried about my 2014 Toyota 4Runner with a diesel engine and just under 281,000 km on the clock. When driving, the check engine light has come on, plus there is black smoke when accelerating and starting in the morning takes longer than usual. The DPF regeneration is also not working properly and the pre-glow light won't go out. Unfortunately, I didn't have such a great experience with my garage last time, so I wanted to ask here: Have any of you out there had similar problems and perhaps even suspected a faulty glow plug? What experiences have you had with the mechanic? Thanks for your help and sharing your experiences!

Hey, I actually had a very similar problem with my 2011 Toyota Hilux. It ended up being the ECU that was causing problems. My car showed similar symptoms, black smoke, long starting time, and the check engine light kept coming on too. The pre-glow light wouldn't go out and the DPF regeneration didn't work properly either. The mechanic at my garage then explained to me that the control unit was defective. He had to replace it completely. So in my case it was unfortunately a pretty serious problem. You should definitely take your 4Runner to a garage that you trust. Hopefully that will help you with your problem.

Hey, thanks for your reply! That sounds like quite a problem. Can you remember how much it cost you to replace the control unit? And have there been any other problems since then? Would be great if you could tell me a bit more about your experiences!

Hey, no problem, I'm glad if I can help you. So, the repair of the control unit cost me €575. Yes, that was quite a lot of money, but since then the problem has been fixed and my car is running smoothly again. Oh, and to your other question: yes, there was another problem, the malfunction of a glow plug, which I haven't had since the last visit to the mechanic. I hope this helps you and you can soon enjoy a fully functional car again!

Thank you for the detailed explanation! 575€ is quite a lot, but if it fixes the problem, then of course it's worth it. I'm glad to hear that your car ran smoothly again afterwards! I'll see where there's a reliable garage near me and have my car checked there. Hopefully I'll have the same luck as you. Thanks again for your help and advice. I really appreciate it. You've really helped me out!
