Diesel Eclipse Cross: Swirl Flap Issues Causing Power Loss?

Hey everyone, having some trouble with my 2020 Eclipse Cross Diesel. The engine's acting up with multiple symptoms, CEL is on, power drops unsual, engine runs rough and shakes at idle, plus there's jerking during acceleration with a loud hissing noise. I suspect it might be related to the swirl flap control in the intake manifold. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the fix was at your workshop. Thanks!

Hi there! I've had some experience with diesels (moderate expertise level) and faced a really similar issue with my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through! Had the same problems, engine light, power loss, rough idle, the whole deal. Took it to my regular workshop and turned out it was indeed a broken swirl flap in the intake manifold. Cost me around 865€ to fix, but it sorted everything out perfectly. Before I share more specific details about my repair experience, could you tell me your current mileage and whether you've had any other engine-related issues before this? Also, have you noticed any black smoke from the exhaust? This info would help me give you more relevant advice based on what I learned from my situation.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is at 61545 KM and just had my last service about 2 months ago. Everything was fine until these symptoms started showing up last week. Haven't noticed any black smoke from the exhaust actually, but that hissing noise is really bothering me. Good to know you managed to fix a similar issue, gives me hope it's not something more serious! Mind sharing more details about the repair process you went through?

Hey again! Yeah, no problem sharing more about my repair experience with the Outlander. Your situation sounds really similar to what I went through, especially with that annoying hissing noise, I remember it driving me crazy! So in my case, the repair took about a day and a half at the workshop. They had to remove the intake manifold to access the swirl flaps (bit of a pain, but necessary). The mechanic found that one of the flaps had actually broken and was causing all those symptoms. They ended up replacing the whole swirl flap control unit because trying to fix just the broken part wasn't worth the risk. The hissing noise you're hearing is probably air leaking around the damaged flap, that's exactly what was happening with mine. And the jerking during acceleration? That's because the engine management system gets confused by the irregular air flow. Since your mileage is pretty similar to what mine was when it happened (I was at around 58000 KM), and you're getting the same symptoms, I'd bet money it's the same issue. Plus, these problems showing up right after a service is pretty common, sometimes the change in oil pressure can expose existing weaknesses in the system. Just a heads up though, don't wait too long to get it fixed. I drove around with the problem for about two weeks before getting it sorted, and it definitely wasn't doing my engine any favors!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That really helps explain what I'm dealing with. Definitely sounds like we had the same issue, and I'm glad you mentioned not to wait too long, I'll book it into my workshop first thing tomorrow morning. The fact that it took a day and a half for repairs is good to know too, I'll arrange for alternative transport. Really appreciate you taking the time to walk me through your experience. It's put my mind at ease knowing it's likely just the swirl flaps and not something more serious. I'll update the thread once I get it fixed in case anyone else runs into the same problem! Thanks again for your help!
