Thanks for the detailed response about the fuel filter heater problem. Your description matches my engine issues perfectly, especially the power loss and rough idle symptoms. Getting this fixed soon since I dont want to risk damage to other components. Just curious, do you remember roughly what you paid for the whole repair? Also, have you experienced any similar engine stalling or filter problems since getting it fixed?

Since getting the fuel filter heater issue resolved at the shop, my Buick has been running perfectly with no power loss or rough idle problems. The total repair came to 95€ for fixing the faulty wiring connection to the heater element. This was actually less expensive than I initially feared. No engine stalling or cold start issues have occurred in the months following the repair. The fuel efficiency returned to normal and the sluggish performance completely disappeared. The check engine light also cleared and hasn't returned. The key was catching it early before it could cause problems with the rest of the fuel system. The mechanic mentioned that leaving it unfixed could have led to much costlier fuel injection repairs down the line. Getting the proper diagnosis and repair done by a shop that knows diesel engines was definitely worth it. My recommendation would be to get it checked soon while the repair is still relatively simple and affordable. The symptoms you describe are classic signs of this particular fuel system issue.

Thanks everyone for the helpful information. I took my Buick to the shop yesterday and got it diagnosed. Turned out the fuel filter heater was indeed the problem, just as suggested. The mechanic found corroded wiring connections and a failing heating element. Total cost came to around 110 Euro for parts and labor, pretty reasonable compared to what I was expecting. They replaced the wiring, installed a new fuel filter with heater, and ran a full system check. The whole job took about 2 hours. Already notice a huge difference in how the engine runs. The power loss is gone, idle is smooth, and the check engine light cleared up. Fuel efficiency seems to be improving too. Really glad I got this fixed before it could cause more serious fuel system damage. A lot cheaper than my last shop experience and definitely worth getting done by someone who knows diesel engines. Thanks again for helping me avoid getting overcharged while still getting the proper repair done.

Had similar symptoms with a 2014 Buick Regal diesel. The fuel filter heater failure caused significant power loss and cold start issues. After multiple attempts at self-diagnosis, the shop confirmed damaged wiring connections to the fuel filter heating element. Main symptoms matched yours: Poor fuel efficiency, Engine power loss, Rough idle, especially during cold starts, Check engine light activation The repair involved: Testing the fuel filter heater circuit, Replacing corroded wiring connectors, Installing a new fuel filter with heating element, Resetting the engine management system This was a moderate repair, not severe enough to cause permanent engine damage if addressed promptly. However, continuing to drive with these symptoms risks damage to the fuel injection system. The failed heater allows fuel to gel in cold conditions, restricting flow and potentially damaging other components. Request a full diagnostic scan before repairs begin. A reputable shop should identify the specific fault codes related to the fuel system and heater circuit. The repair is straightforward for shops with diesel experience. Ensure they perform a fuel system pressure test and check all electrical connections, as these issues often occur together.
