Diesel BMW 5 Series (2017) - Engine warning light and performance problems: suggestions and workshop experience

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Car won't start

Longer cold start time

Good afternoon, everyone! My diesel BMW 5 Series from 2017 (mileage approx. 48763 km) seems to be having problems. The engine light is on, starting problems when it's cold, loss of engine power, jerking when accelerating, sometimes it won't start at all and guzzles way too much fuel. I think it might have something to do with misbehavior of the cruise control. Have any of you had similar experiences and can make recommendations, especially how it went at the garage? Unfortunately, my last visit to the workshop wasn't that great. I look forward to hearing about your experiences. Thank you very much!

Hi, I drive a 2014 diesel BMW 3 Series and had exactly the same symptoms. When I visited the garage, the main problem was a specific sensor defect responsible for engine temperature management. The technician explained that the jerky acceleration and loss of engine power were due to this defect. Starting problems in cold weather and excessive fuel consumption are also symptoms of the same problem. We also had to check and reset the engine control unit. It was a lot of work, but in the end my car is now running smoothly again. I can therefore recommend that you take your car to the garage and have the specific sensors and the control unit checked. It's a pain, but it's definitely necessary. Hope this helps you. All the best!

Hello, thank you for sharing your experience with me. It does seem that we have similar problems. Approximately how much did the repair at the garage cost you? You mentioned the engine control unit - have there been any other problems since the reset or is your car now running consistently well? Looking forward to your reply. Thanks a lot!

Hello, since the visit to the workshop my car has been running like clockwork again, there have been no further problems with the engine control unit. The problem with the misbehavior of the cruise control was also fixed there. Regarding the repair costs: Most of the money was spent on cleaning the intake ducts, which were quite dirty. That cost me around €425 in total. So I think it's definitely worth taking your car to a mechanic if you have the same problems. You'll notice the difference straight away, and ultimately you'll probably recoup your money by using less fuel. All the best!

Hello, your reply is very reassuring. It's good to hear that everything went smoothly again after the repair. The cost also seems to be in line with what I expected. I will definitely make an appointment at the garage to have the sensors and engine control unit checked. I hope I can also reduce the fuel consumption again. Thanks again for your advice and your time. I really appreciate it! All the best.

Based on the symptoms you've described, it could be a problem with a sensor or the engine control unit, similar to what was discussed earlier in this thread. However, it's also possible that it could be due to a variety of other issues such as a clogged fuel filter, faulty spark plugs, or a failing fuel pump. I would recommend starting with the easiest check, which is to ensure your fuel filter is not clogged and your spark plugs are in good condition. If the problem persists, it would be best to have a mechanic check your car, especially the sensors and engine control unit. Remember, issues with the engine warning light can be safety-relevant, so it's important to get it checked out.

This error typically indicates a misfire in cylinder 1. Misfires can be caused by a variety of issues such as faulty spark plugs, fuel injector problems, or even a compression issue in the cylinder. Start by checking the spark plug and fuel injector for cylinder 1. If these components are functioning properly, you may need to perform a compression test to check the health of the cylinder. If you're not comfortable doing these checks yourself, I would recommend taking your car to a mechanic. Please keep us updated on your progress.
