Determining Solutions for Rough Start and Dimming Lights in 2014 Nissan Serena

Weak battery when starting the engine

Dim or flickering lights

Hey folks, recently my 2014 Nissan Serena has been having a bit of a rough start and the lights have been dimming or flickering more than usual, despite having a gasoline engine. I'm thinking the battery might be heavily discharged. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, and how did you or your mechanic resolve the issue? All tips and first-hand experiences are very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had a similar issue recently with my 2012 Nissan Quest. I'm no expert on cars but can share my experience. I took it to my local mechanic and after some checks, they found out it wasn't a battery problem, but a defective control unit was the culprit. I shelled out about 600 Euro to have it fixed. Your mileage (and cost) may vary of course. It sounds like your Serena might be dealing with the same problem. Just to be sure though, what all has been done on it maintenance-wise lately? Any other symptoms or issues you are noticing?

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience. My Serena has clocked about 56842 KM so far and I haven't really faced any other significant issues to be honest. The last service happened quite recently where we just did the routine check and nothing major popped up, everything seemed to be in order then. But yeah, I think you might be onto something with your control unit suggestion, I certainly hadn't considered that. I'll get my mechanic to check it out and see what he finds. Fingers crossed it doesn't end up costing as much as it did for you. Cheers!

Good to hear back from you! Looking at the kilometers you've mentioned, your Serena is still relatively young for major issues, unless it's been driven hard or has missed some servicing. Since you've recently had a routine check and nothing significant came up, the control unit fault might just be a fluke. It's always good to have it checked—it can save you a lot of battery-related hassle further down the line. I do hope it ends up being something minor and less costly. Feel free to let me know how it goes, and don't hesitate if you have any more questions. Fingers crossed for you too!

Really appreciate your help and advice! Yeah, I agree that the control unit might just need a repair or replacement."Your mileage may vary," nice pun by the way! You're right, the Serena hasn't been driven too hard, just the usual city-to-work trip. I'm just hoping it's not too expensive a fix! I'll definitely keep you posted on what my mechanic says. If there are any more questions, I'll be sure to come back to you. Thanks again! You've really alleviated a bit of my anxiety around this. Cheers!
