Defender Hybrid Suspension Issues: Bouncing & Uneven Ride

Uneven Ride Height

|

Excessive Bouncing

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2020 Defender Hybrid's suspension. The ride height is noticeably uneven and I'm getting excessive bouncing while driving. I suspect there might be an issue with the height control system. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really curious to know what the diagnosis was and how your workshop resolved it. Any tips or experiences would help me understand what I'm dealing with.

Hey there! I've got some experience with hybrid SUVs and had a pretty similar issue with my 2018 Range Rover Hybrid. Actually, my cousin also owns a Range Rover Sport and dealt with something like this. I took mine to the workshop when I noticed uneven ride height, and it turned out to be a faulty cable connection on one of the height sensors. The repair cost me 155 Euro, they basically had to clean and resecure the connection, plus replace some corroded wiring. Before jumping to conclusions though, have you noticed any warning lights on the dash? Does the uneven height happen on one particular side? Does it get worse after the car sits for a while? This info would help figure out if you're dealing with the same thing I did. These systems can be tricky, but usually it's something fixable without major surgery on the car!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I have similar symptoms, the uneven height is mainly on the front passenger side, and yes, it does get worse after the car sits overnight. No warning lights so far, which is interesting. My Defender just hit 161961 KM and had its last service two months ago, but they didn't spot any suspension issues then. Your sensor connection issue sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing. Did your car also make any weird noises when adjusting height? Mine makes a sort of clicking sound sometimes when I start it up. Really hoping it's just a connection problem like yours and not something more serious with the compressor or airbags themselves. Maybe I should get those sensors checked first before assuming the worst!

Hey again! Yeah, those clicking sounds you're describing are exactly what I experienced with my Range Rover before getting it fixed! It's pretty uncanny how similar your symptoms are to what I dealt with. Now that you mention the clicking noise, I totally remember that, it was like this distinct click-click sound during startup, especially on cold mornings. The fact that your issue gets worse after sitting overnight also matches my experience perfectly. One thing I learned during my repair process, if you're hearing those clicks but not seeing warning lights, it's usually a good sign. It typically means the system is still trying to work but just can't get proper readings from the sensor. In my case, when they cleaned those connections and replaced the corroded wiring, the clicking completely disappeared. Quick tip from my experience, before you take it in, try looking under the car around the wheel where you're getting the uneven height. In my case, you could actually see some corrosion around the sensor connector (it was kind of greenish). If you spot anything similar, definitely mention it to your mechanic. Could save them some diagnostic time! Just make sure they check those sensor connections first before diving into more expensive repairs. Really hope it's the same straightforward fix for you as it was for me!

Thanks so much for all those details! It's really reassuring to hear that your experience was so similar to mine, especially about those clicking sounds. I just checked under the car like you suggested, and I actually noticed some greenish stuff around the connector, exactly as you described! This makes me feel so much better about the whole situation. I was worried I'd be looking at a massive repair bill, but if it's just sensor connections and some wiring, that sounds way more manageable. I've already called my mechanic and booked it in for next week, making sure to mention the sensor connections and corrosion specifically. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and tips. It's definitely helped me understand what I might be dealing with, and hopefully saved me some cash too! I'll probably give you an update once it's fixed, fingers crossed it's the same straightforward repair you had!

Let our mechanics help you!
