Defender Hybrid Overheating: Electric Pump Failure Help?

Overheating

Check engine light on

Hey all, my 2021 Defender Hybrid started acting up today, engine temp shot up and check engine light came on. I suspect it's the electric coolant pump failing. Has anyone dealt with this issue? Would love to hear about repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Any tips on what to look out for when getting it fixed? Thanks!

Hey there! I have some experience working on hybrids, and I actually dealt with something very similar on my 2019 Range Rover Sport Hybrid. When the engine temp warning popped up, I was pretty worried too! Took it to my regular workshop, and it turned out to be a faulty cable connection to the electric coolant pump. The repair was fairly straightforward, they replaced the damaged cable and ran some diagnostics to make sure everything was working properly. Cost me around 95 Euro, and it's been running perfectly since then. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share if you noticed any other symptoms? Like unusual noises from the engine bay or changes in performance? Also, which engine variant does your Defender have? This info would help me give you more specific advice about what to watch out for. Pro tip: Keep an eye on your coolant levels while you're getting this sorted. These hybrid cooling systems can be a bit tricky!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My Defender is at 62553 KM and had its last service about 3 months back. The symptoms are pretty similar to what you described, no weird noises, just the sudden temp spike and warning light. It's a P400e hybrid model. Good to hear your repair was straightforward! That's really reassuring, especially since I was worried it might be something major. Did your mechanic mention anything specific about the diagnostic process? I'm planning to take it in tomorrow, just want to make sure they check all the right things. By the way, has your coolant pump been reliable since the repair? Just curious about the long-term reliability after fixing these issues.

Hey again! Really glad I could help earlier. Yeah, so after that cable fix on my Range Rover Sport, I've put on about 35000 KM with zero issues, the coolant pump's been working like a charm! About the diagnostic process, my mechanic first hooked up the diagnostic tool to confirm it was the pump circuit, then did a pressure test on the cooling system. That's probably what they'll do with yours too. The P400e has pretty much the same cooling setup as my Sport, so they should be familiar with it. One thing I forgot to mention earlier, while they were fixing mine, they also checked the coolant temperature sensors just to be thorough. Turns out that's another common weak point in these systems. Might be worth asking them to take a look at those too while they're in there. Just make sure they use the right coolant type when they're done, these hybrids are picky about that stuff! Let me know how it goes tomorrow. I'm pretty confident it'll be something simple like mine was, especially since your symptoms are so similar. Keep us posted about what they find! Always good to share these experiences for other hybrid owners.

I'll complete the conversation from's perspective: Thanks so much for all this detailed info! You've really put my mind at ease about the whole thing. I'll definitely ask them to check those temperature sensors too, that's a great tip I wouldn't have thought about. Just got off the phone with the workshop and booked it in for tomorrow morning. I made sure to mention everything we discussed, including the possibility of cable issues and the importance of using the right coolant. They seemed pretty knowledgeable about hybrid systems, which is reassuring. I'll update the thread once I get it back from the shop. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's helped me feel much more confident about handling this! Been stressing about it all day, but now I'm pretty sure it's going to be a straightforward fix. Thanks again!
