Dead VW Phaeton AC: Compressor Failure Guide

Need advice with AC compressor issue on my 2015 VW Phaeton. The car air conditioning stopped working completely. No cooling at all and the system wont even turn on. Warning light on the dash is lit up and error code stored. 107910km on the clock, diesel engine. Pretty sure its the AC compressor but had some questionable repair experiences lately. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for recommendations on what to check and rough cost estimates for compressor replacement if needed.

Had the same AC unit issues on my 2012 VW Touareg TDI last summer. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, complete cooling system failure, warning light, and stored error code. Initially thought it was just low refrigerant, but diagnostic testing revealed a failed compressor control module, not the compressor itself. The control unit regulates compressor engagement and cycling. When it fails, the entire HVAC system stays offline as a protective measure. Key indicators that pointed to control module rather than compressor: System completely unresponsive (not even trying to engage), No mechanical noise from compressor area, Warning light immediate on startup, Error code related to control circuit The repair required replacing the electronic control unit for the AC compressor. This was a serious job requiring specialized diagnostic equipment to properly code the new module to the vehicle systems. Also needed refrigerant recovery and recharge after repair. Recommend having a proper diagnosis done before replacing the full compressor. Control module issues can mimic compressor failure symptoms, but cost significantly less to fix. The vehicle HVAC system needs proper testing to pinpoint the exact fault.

Thanks for sharing your repair experience. Dealing with an automotive cooling system issue right now as well, and needed that info about the control module. My Phaeton has been at the shop for 2 weeks and still waiting on parts. Did the car air conditioning work reliably after fixing the control module? Also curious what the total repair cost ended up being for your fix, since I am getting different quotes from shops. Any refrigerant leaks or other AC problems since the repair was done?

Great to report back, after getting the auto AC repair done, my Touareg's cooling system has worked flawlessly. The refrigerant compressor failure was correctly diagnosed and the control module replacement fixed the issue completely. No leaks or problems in the car air conditioning since then. The total cost came to 980€ for the AC unit repair, including: New control module, Programming and coding, Auto refrigerant system evacuation and recharge, Labor costs It was worth getting the proper diagnosis rather than jumping straight to a full compressor replacement. The car has been running perfectly for over a year now with no automotive cooling issues whatsoever. The repair shop did need to order the control module which took about a week, but that is normal for this type of specialized part.

Thanks for the helpful advice. Finally got my Phaeton back from the vehicle HVAC repair. Turned out it was exactly the same issue, faulty control module for the AC compressor. Total bill came to 1150€ which included parts, labor, and a complete system recharge. The wait for parts was frustrating since they had to source the control module from another supplier after the first one arrived damaged. But the automotive cooling system is now working perfectly. Getting nice cold air and no more warning lights on the dash. The shop also pressure tested the entire air conditioning system and found no refrigerant leaks. They showed me the old control module which had visible damage from what they said was a power surge. Really glad I didnt rush into replacing the whole AC compressor based on initial symptoms.
