Dead Power Windows on VW Fox: Motor vs Regulator Fix

Recently my power windows stopped working completely on my 2007 VW Fox diesel (30255km). The diagnostic scan shows a window regulator error. Had some questionable repairs at my last mechanic visit, so I am a bit cautious now. Has anyone dealt with similar window issues on a Fox? Looking for advice on whether this typically needs a full window motor replacement or if it could be something simpler like the regulator needing reset. What should I expect for repair time and common issues to watch out for?

Having experienced similar power window issues on my 2010 VW Polo diesel, I can relate to your situation. The window regulator error often points to either a failed window motor or a worn regulator assembly. In my case, the workshop found that moisture had damaged the window motor connections, but the window regulator itself was intact. The repair involved replacing the power window motor and cleaning the electrical contacts. Total repair time was about 2 hours for diagnosis and replacement. For the Fox, these symptoms typically suggest: Failed window motor (most common), Damaged window regulator assembly, Faulty window switch connections, Electrical wiring issues The window reset procedure should be attempted first, as its free and quick: 1. Turn ignition on 2. Press and hold window switch down 3. Release and press again for 5 seconds 4. Repeat with up direction If the reset fails, professional diagnosis is needed since window motor replacement requires proper calibration. This is not a DIY-friendly repair due to the need for specialized tools and programming equipment. Important: Continuing to operate failing power windows can cause additional damage to the window regulator mechanism.

Thanks for sharing your Polo experience. I had the exact same window regulator issue with my Fox last year. Found out the door panel needed to be removed to access the window controls and motor. Wondering if you remember the total repair cost? After my power window repair, I noticed the window switch felt a bit loose. Curious if you experienced any follow-up issues with the car electronics or window components? I know these VW window problems can cascade into bigger issues if not addressed properly, so Im keen to hear how yours held up after the fix.

After getting the car window system properly diagnosed, I paid 290€ to replace the vehicle battery which was causing the window regulator initialization errors. The loose window switch you mentioned is a common issue, but mine has stayed firm since the repair. The power window system has worked flawlessly for the past 8 months. No more error messages or window motor problems. The key was having the window controls properly recalibrated after the battery replacement, this fixed the initialization errors completely. Worth noting that the window regulator and motor components were actually fine, despite showing similar symptoms. Sometimes these window issues stem from power supply problems rather than mechanical failure. My window reset procedure works perfectly now, which confirms it was an electrical rather than mechanical issue. Make sure your mechanic tests the complete electrical system when fixing window controls, as a loose switch could indicate underlying voltage issues.

Thanks for the advice. After reading about similar experiences, I finally got my Fox fixed last week. The window regulator issue turned out to be simpler than expected. Took it to a new mechanic who specializes in electrical systems. The power window problem was traced to corroded window controls rather than a complete motor failure. They cleaned the connections and replaced the window switch for 180€. The repair only took about an hour. The door panel had to come off, but the process was straightforward. The window controls now work smoothly, no more sticking or initialization errors. Really glad I switched mechanics, as my previous one had quoted for a full window motor replacement at triple the cost. Worth noting the diagnostic scan helped identify the exact issue. The car window system needed recalibration after the repair, but thats been solid since. No electrical gremlins or loose connections so far. A much better outcome than I initially feared when the power windows failed. Sometimes getting a second opinion really pays off with these electrical issues.
