Dead GMC Savana Key Fob, Battery vs. Other Issues

Having trouble with my 2014 GMC Savana key fob not working. Remote locking and unlocking stopped working completely. The car is showing a key battery low warning in the dash. Anyone dealt with a similar dead key issue? Looking for tips before going to a shop, especially interested if a battery replacement fixed it or if there were other underlying problems I should watch out for. What was the repair cost in your case?

I had the exact same electronic key issue with my 2012 GMC Yukon last winter. I have some basic car maintenance experience, mainly oil changes and simple repairs. The key fob stopped working suddenly, and the dashboard showed that low battery warning. After a few attempts to unlock the car remotely, it completely stopped responding. Took it to a repair shop and they confirmed the key battery was dead. The replacement was straightforward, they used a CR2032 battery and reprogrammed the auto key to sync with my car. Total cost was 37 Euro, including labor and the new battery. Before you head to a shop though, could you share: Have you noticed any other electrical issues? Does the physical key still work in the door lock? When did you last replace the key battery? Are you getting any other warning messages besides the low battery alert? This information would help determine if its just a simple key fob battery issue or if theres something else going on with the electronic system.

Just had my service done at 110539KM and experienced similar key fob problems. Got it fixed really easy, total cost was 15 Euro for a new CR2032 battery. Changed it myself and the low voltage warning disappeared right away. The auto key started working perfectly after that. All remote functions are back to normal now. If the new battery doesnt solve it, might need reprogramming at a shop, but try the simple fix first.

Thanks for sharing your successful repair experience. Your case confirms what I found with my Yukon, a low voltage battery is usually the root cause of key fob problems. The CR2032 battery replacement at just 15 Euro is definitely the way to start troubleshooting before considering more complex solutions. For others reading this thread: watch for these warning signs that indicate your key fob battery needs replacement: Remote locking becomes inconsistent, Need to press buttons multiple times, Low battery warning on dashboard, Reduced key fob range The battery replacement fixed both our issues without needing the expensive reprogramming I initially got. My later research showed the key fob battery typically lasts 3-4 years, so its worth keeping track of when you last changed it. Good that you did the fix yourself, its much more cost-effective than the 37 Euro I spent at the shop. Would recommend anyone else with similar symptoms to try replacing the fob battery first before assuming worst-case scenarios.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Really glad I asked here before going to a shop. Ended up being exactly what you all suggested, just a dead key battery issue. Grabbed a CR2032 battery for 15 Euro and replaced it myself. The dashboard warning disappeared right away and the electronic key is working perfectly now. The remote locking, unlocking, and all other fob functions are back to normal. Much better than spending money at a shop for such a simple fix. Will definitely keep track of when I changed the battery so I know when to expect the next replacement. Really appreciate all the helpful responses that saved me time and money.
