Dacia Duster Diesel Issues: Check Engine Light, Black Smoke and Troublesome Pre-Glow Light

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Longer cold start time

Check engine light on

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Hey! I'm wrangling with a rather pesky issue with my 2012 Dacia Duster, 48389 KM on the ticker, diesel beast. I'm getting a lit-up check engine, black smoke when I put the pedal down, she's taking her sweet time to fire up in the cold, DPF regen goes awry, and the pre-glow light's acting like a stubborn mule. From the look of it, I'm thinking it might be a cranky glow plug. Any of you gearheads ran into something similar? If so, how was your experience with your mechanic? Bit cautious since I had a bit of a rough ride the last time I dropped by one. Cheers!

Hey there! It's rather funny, not too long ago I had a comparable issue with my 2009 Dacia Logan. We seem to share the stubborn pre-glow light and the reluctance to start on cold mornings. After fumbling around a bit, I finally unearthed that the wiring harness from my glow control unit to the engine control unit was defective. The mechanic I worked with was real professional about it - had the issue diagnosed pretty quick. He had to remove some parts for better access and spent quite some time on the fix, but got the job done. It wasn't a wallop, but not a gentle tap either, if you catch my drift. Wasn't a fan of the inconvenience, but my Logan runs smoother now, the way she used to. In short, your assumption might be spot on. if it's anything like what I had, the best bet would be to have the harness checked by a reliable mechanic. It's a bit of a sticky wicket, but sure enough you'll leave it in your dust once it's sorted. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for sharing that! Our cars certainly sound eerily similar when it comes to these mishaps. Your experience gives me a good stepping stone in this mechanical labyrinth I've found myself in. If you don't mind me asking, how much did that set you back? Hope it didn't bore too deep into your wallet. Did any other gremlins pop up later or has your Logan been driving like a dream since? Cheers!

Hey again! Oh, don't sweat it, happy to share. As for the dough, the faulty wiring harness issue needed some serious sorting, and it cost me around 395€. I know, kind of a substantial figure, isn't it? But let me tell you, every euro was worth it. The old girl runs like clockwork since the repair. After seeing the mechanic and getting that stubborn glow plug issue fixed, everything's been tip-top! No sneaky gremlins coming out of the bonnet so far. The mechanic pulled through, definitely got my money's worth. Key bit is to find a good mechanic who knows his stuff and won't take you for a ride. So, bite the bullet and get that checked out. I’m sure your Duster will thank you for it and be purring like a kitten in no time! Keep us posted, yeah? Safe driving!

Appreciate the info! It's really giving me a clearer picture about what I'm dealing with. And 395€ does have a bit of a sting to it, won't lie. But I guess when you're in love with your car, these are the lengths you gotta go to, right? The relief of having no more unexpected surprises pop up is definitely something I'm looking forward to. Now I've just gotta find a proficient mechanic who'll treat my Dacia right. Fingers crossed! Will certainly keep you fellas updated on the progress. Thanks for the well wishes and expert advice! Stay safe and happy motoring!
