Corsa EV Range Drop & Check Engine Mystery Needs Help

Poor fuel economy

|

Check engine light on

|

Strong exhaust smell

Hey everyone, getting worried about my 2019 Vauxhall Corsa (Electric). The check engine light just popped on, and I've noticed my range is dropping faster than usual. There's also this strong smell coming from the exhaust. I suspect it might be an air valve issue, but after a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Car's done about 225,806 km. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Any recommendations for trustworthy mechanics who know their way around electric Corsas? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2016 Vauxhall Ampera-e last month. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, the range drop and check engine light were my first clues too. Took it to my regular garage and turns out it was indeed the secondary air valve connection that was acting up. The cable and plug connections had corroded, causing the system to malfunction. It wasn't a major repair, but it definitely needed immediate attention to prevent any damage to the emission control system. The fix involved replacing the faulty connections and cleaning the entire valve assembly. The mechanic also ran a full diagnostic to ensure there weren't any related issues. Got it sorted in about half a day, and my range went back to normal right away. If you're in this situation, don't put it off, these symptoms usually don't resolve themselves. Any certified Vauxhall dealer should be able to handle this, but make sure they have experience with electric vehicles. Hope this helps with your decision!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! This definitely sounds similar to what I went through. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? And has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? I'm particularly asking because I've heard these valve issues can sometimes be connected to other problems, and I'd like to know what to look out for. Cheers!

Hey again! Yeah, happy to help with those details! I got it fixed about a month ago and it cost me exactly 95€, mostly for sorting out that dodgy cable and plug connection between the secondary air valve and pump. To be honest, it was cheaper than I expected, and definitely worth every penny. Since the fix, my Ampera-e has been running like a dream! The range is back to normal, no more weird smells, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. Haven't noticed any other issues popping up either, so I reckon the mechanic did a proper job. I totally get your concern about connected problems, I was worried about that too. But in my case, it really was just the air valve connection playing up. The mechanic did a thorough check while they had it in, and everything else looked solid. My advice? Get it sorted sooner rather than later. These things can snowball if you leave them too long, but catch them early and it's usually a pretty straightforward fix. Good luck with it!

Thanks a lot for all the detailed info! Just wanted to update you on what happened with my Corsa. I took your advice and got it checked out right away at the Vauxhall dealer you mentioned. Turns out it was exactly what you said, the air valve connection was the culprit. Cost me 110€, a bit more than yours but still reasonable. The funny thing is, when I got there, the mechanic recognized my car from when the previous owner had it serviced! He was super helpful and even showed me what was wrong. Fixed it in about 4 hours, and now my car's running perfectly again. Range is back to normal, and that annoying smell is gone. Really glad I didn't wait around on this one. Thanks again for pushing me to get it sorted quickly, you saved me from what could've been a much bigger headache! Cheers for all the help!
