Concerns with Ford Escape 2013: symptoms and workshop recommendations wanted

Loud hissing on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Whistling noise

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I'm a little concerned about my 2013 Ford Escape with gasoline engine and 134,056km mileage. It has a few symptoms that make me really suspicious, like black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on and I also feel power loss. It also jerks when accelerating and there is this loud hissing noise. The fuel consumption is quite high and it smells strongly of exhaust. And then there's this whistling noise... I suspect it might have something to do with the charge air temperature sensor. Have any of you ever had experience with this and can give me good advice or a tip for a workshop? Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with my last one and don't want to go through that again. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I had exactly this situation with my 2010 Ford Focus. In the end, the evaluation electronics were defective (engine control unit). It was a serious problem because the symptoms were very similar - black smoke, high fuel consumption, jerking when accelerating and this strange hissing noise. Of course, the whole thing had to be fixed professionally in a workshop. First they scanned the fault memory, in my case the reader displayed the corresponding fault code. Then they determined the cause of the damage and finally replaced the engine control unit. That was quite a big job. Everything sounded much smoother afterwards and the jerking and excessive consumption were gone. Don't worry, there are lots of great garages out there! Good luck.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Your experience with the Ford Focus seems very similar to my situation. The problem with the engine control unit opens up a whole new perspective for me. Could you perhaps remember how much you paid the garage to fix it? And since the replacement, have there been any other problems or has everything changed for the better? I'm just hopeful at the moment that it's nothing super serious and I won't be disappointed again. Thank you so much for your help!

Hey, no problem, I'm happy to help! In my case, it was a total of €1000 to fix the problem with the defective evaluation electronics, i.e. the engine control unit. Not exactly a penny, but since then the car has been running like a charm. As you suspect, I also had a problem with the charge air temperature sensor. But since the visit to the workshop, this has been fixed and the car has been running without any malfunction of the charge air temperature sensor. There was no further trouble. Sure, it cost a bit, but in the end it was absolutely worth it! So don't worry, if you find a good garage, they'll certainly get your problem under control. Good luck!

Hey, thanks again for your helpful words! Your feedback gives me relief. 1000 is a lot of money, but when I consider that my car will be running smoothly again afterwards, it seems like a worthwhile investment. I will definitely check with a few garages in the area and hopefully find one that can help me. I'm reassured to know that this problem is solvable and that my car should be fine afterwards. Thank you! Your advice was really valuable. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
