Concern about Opel Insignia: symptoms and possible causes

Strong exhaust smell

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Longer cold start time

Loss of engine power

Hey guys, I'm a bit worried about my Opel Insignia, built in 2010, petrol engine, with approx. 168,129 km on the clock. I'm currently experiencing lots of strange symptoms such as black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, longer starting times in cold weather, loss of power, jerking when accelerating, poorer fuel consumption and a strong exhaust odor. I fear that it has something to do with the mixture control, that the mixture is perhaps too rich? Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with the last mechanic. Has anyone had similar problems and could say something about it? It would be really interesting to know what your experience with the mechanic was like so that I can better assess what to expect! Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hey, I recently had similar problems with my 2013 Opel Zafira. I also noticed black smoke when accelerating and the check engine light kept coming on. After I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, the car ran as normal again. It's not a trivial defect and the repair was quite complicated, but it was definitely necessary. I can only advise you not to take your problems lightly and to check the fuel pressure regulator. Have a good trip and hopefully it's nothing more serious.

Hey, thanks for the tip with the fuel pressure regulator! I'm glad it helped you. Do you happen to remember how much you paid for the repair? Has anything else come up since then or has your car been running smoothly since then? I'm really not a fan of repeated visits to the garage... Thank you for your reply!

Hey, of course I still remember that! I spent 250 euros on replacing the fuel pressure regulator. That's a bit of a bite, but since then my car has been running like a kitten again. Since the visit to the mechanic, the fault in the mixture control has finally been rectified and the mixture is no longer too rich. I haven't had any more problems since then and haven't had to go back to the garage. So it was definitely money well spent. I hope it goes as smoothly for you and that your problem is solved quickly!

Hello, that sounds reassuring! 250 is quite a lot, but if my car runs normally again like yours, it's an investment I'm happy to make. It's really a relief to hear that you haven't had any more problems since then. I will go to the garage tomorrow and have the fuel pressure regulator checked. Thank you again for your help and helpful tips. I'll keep you posted as soon as I have any news. Take care and safe driving!
