Chrysler Stratus Damping Failure: Suspension Warning Alert

Had the car in for its 6896 KM service last month where they did a general inspection. The suspension issue definitely started gradually over the past few weeks. The shock absorber behavior seems consistent regardless of temperature, but I notice a distinct clunking sound from the front right when going over speed bumps. It is helpful to know about the wiring connection issue you encountered. The symptoms do sound similar, though the clunking noise makes me wonder if the suspension system might have additional mechanical problems beyond just electrical connections. Will have the workshop check both the wiring and the physical components.

Thanks for providing those additional details about your Stratus. The clunking noise you mention from the front right is quite different from the wiring issue I had on my Sebring, suggesting we might be looking at a more complex suspension system problem. When my damping control issues occurred, there were no mechanical noises. A clunking sound often indicates worn suspension components, possibly a failing strut mount or worn control arm bushings. These parts are common wear items in our model range. Based on your relatively low mileage, the gradual onset, and that distinct noise, I recommend having the workshop focus on: 1. Front strut assembly inspection 2. Control arm bushings check 3. Electrical connections to the damping control unit In my experience with these models, the suspension tuning can be affected by both mechanical and electrical issues simultaneously. My repair cost was low at 95€ because it was purely an electrical fix. If you need mechanical components replaced, expect costs between 350-600€ depending on what parts require attention. The ride comfort should return to normal once both the mechanical and potential electrical issues are addressed. Would be interested to hear what the workshop finds in your case.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the wiring issue. Your input is valuable since the vehicle suspension symptoms do sound similar, though the clunking noise from my front right does suggest something beyond electrical problems. Given my low mileage after the recent service, I am somewhat surprised by these suspension issues developing. The gradual decline in damping control and now this distinct noise over speed bumps has me concerned. I will make sure the workshop inspects both the mechanical components and electrical connections you mentioned. Will definitely get back to the forum once I have a diagnosis. The price range you provided for potential repairs helps set realistic expectations. Really hope it is just a minor shock absorber issue rather than needing a complete front suspension overhaul. Thanks again for the detailed guidance on what to have checked.

Having some experience with a similar issue on my 1998 Chrysler Sebring, I can relate to your suspension tuning concerns. The symptoms you describe match what I encountered, poor ride comfort and warning lights. The root cause in my case was a faulty wire connection to the electronic damping control unit. The workshop found that the cable connector had corroded over time, causing intermittent communication issues with the suspension system. The repair involved cleaning the connection points and replacing the damaged cable section, costing 95€ in total. The vehicle suspension returned to normal function after fixing the connection issue. The car damping improved significantly, and the warning light disappeared. Before suggesting more specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage on your Stratus, Whether the issue started suddenly or developed gradually, If you notice any difference in suspension behavior between cold and warm weather, Whether you hear any unusual noises when driving over bumps This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or points to a different suspension issue.
