Check engine light and loss of power in Ford Fusion 2007: Exchange of experience and advice wanted

Exhaust leak

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hello everyone, I need your help please. On my 2007 Ford Fusion gasoline with almost 78044 km mileage, the check engine light comes on and I have noticed a loss of engine power. I get black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, smell a fairly strong exhaust and suspect an exhaust leak. I suspect it could be an exhaust aftertreatment malfunction. Have any of you had similar experiences and can help me? How did your visit to the mechanic go? Unfortunately, my last experience there wasn't that great, so I'd like to get some input. Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I had a similar problem with my 2005 Ford Focus, where a fault in one of the lambda sensors was the culprit. These sensors monitor the exhaust gas values and if one of them is not working properly, this naturally leads to problems like the one you described. At the last workshop visit, the defective sensor simply had to be replaced. However, your symptoms sound exactly like mine at the time, so it could well be that you also have this problem. After all, it was a serious matter for me, as the car was no longer performing at full power and fuel consumption was increasing. So I would recommend you visit the mechanic and get it checked out. All the best!

Hi, thanks for your contribution! It really sounds like we have the same problem. My Ford Fusion is going through a tough time at the moment. Can you perhaps remember the costs you incurred for the repair back then? And did you have any similar problems afterwards, or was everything fixed when the lambda sensor was replaced? Best regards!

Hello, I'm glad I was able to help you. I remember that replacing the defective lambda sensor cost me around €375 at the time. I know that's a lot of money, but after that the spook was over. If I remember correctly, the problem with the exhaust gases and the drop in performance was resolved. The exhaust aftertreatment malfunction no longer occurred after the visit to the mechanic. Then my Focus was finally able to pull away properly again and the fuel consumption went down. I hope it works the same for you! If you have any further questions, please get in touch. Best regards!

Hi, great, thanks for the detailed answer! 375 is indeed a lot of money, but if it solves the problem, it's worth it. It's always reassuring to hear that someone else had the same problem and was able to solve it. Plan to make an appointment with the mechanic first thing tomorrow morning and hope everything goes as smoothly as it did for you. Thanks again for the advice! See you then!
