Check engine light and DPF regeneration problems in the 2016 BMW 5 Series Diesel

DPF regeneration failure

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Check engine light on

Hello friends, I need your advice. The car in my BMW 5 Series Diesel built in 2016 (already 148,000 km down) is acting up. The check engine light is flashing, the DPF regeneration is on strike and there is also a warning light at the speedometer. Could it be that the Ad-Blue tank is empty? Have any of you ever had a similar problem and what was your experience with the mechanic? I would really appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I had similar problems with my 2019 BMW 3 Series. The check engine light was also flashing and there were problems with the DPF regeneration. I was also at a loss at first, but then went to the workshop. It turned out that the Ad-Blue tank was perfectly fine. So your problem could be more to do with the DPF or possibly a sensor. In my case, the DPF had to be cleaned and a sensor replaced. It was a serious issue, but not as bad as I originally thought. So don't panic, best to take your car to an experienced mechanic who ideally specializes in BMW. Hope this helps you a bit. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for your advice. It's a shame you had such a hassle too, but I'm glad to hear it wasn't anything too bad. I was unsure whether it could be the AdBlue tank, but you've already experienced this and in your car it was the DPF and a sensor. I'll take it up with the mechanic then. Do you happen to remember what you paid for the repair and whether anything else has come up since then? Thank you!

Hey, yes, I remember that. It was a total of €65 to fix the problem. Since it was done, nothing else has come up with my car. So the Ad-Blue problem is completely off the table. Hope that helps you!

Hi, that's really helpful to know and reassures me a little. I will definitely make an appointment with the mechanic for these issues and discuss the possible problems with my car. Hopefully my car won't cause any more trouble then. It's good to know that it shouldn't be too expensive compared to what I was thinking. Thanks again for your help and advice. It's great to know you have the experiences of other car owners to fall back on. Hope I can help next time. Take care!
