Check Engine + Hot Astra: Damper Issue Solutions Needed

Overheating

Check engine light on

Hey there, having some trouble with my 2019 Astra. Check engine light came on and the car's running hot. I suspect it might be the controlled air damper acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and had it fixed? What did your mechanic find and how was it resolved? Any input would be helpful, especially from those who've been through this.

Hey! I've got some experience with cars (some experience), and I had a similar issue with my 2017 Vauxhall Insignia last summer. The symptoms were exactly like yours, engine light and overheating issues. Turned out the radiator shutter wiring harness was worn out behind the front bumper. Got it fixed at my local Vauxhall workshop, cost me around 215 Euro. The mechanic had to replace the entire wiring harness, but it solved the problem completely. What's your mileage? Also, have you noticed any other warning lights or unusual behavior? Knowing these details would help to confirm if we're dealing with the same problem.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! My Astra's at 33233 KM, and I just had service done last month. Yeah, your situation sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. Interesting about the wiring harness, I haven't noticed any other warning lights, just the engine light and the temperature issue. Did you notice any particular sounds or vibrations before getting it fixed? I'm thinking of taking it to the workshop this week, but wanted to get some insights first. Really appreciate the heads up about the potential cost too!

Hey again! Yeah, now that you mention it, I do remember there was this slight humming noise coming from the front of my Insignia before I got it fixed. Nothing too dramatic, but definitely noticeable when idling. Your mileage is actually pretty similar to what mine was when I had the issue (I was around 35K at the time). Since you just had service done last month, definitely mention that to the mechanic, could be related, though probably just coincidental timing. In my case, the workshop showed me the damaged wiring, it was all frayed and exposed from rubbing against some other components. They told me it's actually a somewhat common issue with our Vauxhall models. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before I got it fixed, I noticed the engine temperature would fluctuate a bit, especially in slow traffic. Did you notice anything like that? If you're seeing the same symptoms, it's probably the same issue. Just make sure to get it checked soon, I learned the hard way that putting it off can lead to bigger problems! Let me know what the workshop says. Curious to know if it turns out to be the same problem. Good luck!

Thanks so much for all the details! Actually, yes, I've noticed that exact same temperature fluctuation in traffic! And come to think of it, there is a slight humming sound that I've been hearing lately but didn't think much of. You've really helped put my mind at ease about this whole situation. I've already called the workshop and booked it in for tomorrow morning, definitely don't want to risk any bigger problems like you mentioned. Will let you know what they find, but sounds like we might be dealing with the same issue. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and all the follow-up info. Thanks again!
