Challenger's Electric Steering Column Dies: Help Needed

Electric steering column adjustment without function

Hey all, having trouble with my '07 Mitsubishi Challenger diesel. The electric steering column adjustment has completely stopped working. I suspect it might be the adjustment motor, but not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Really interested in repair costs and time needed for the fix. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my '09 Mitsubishi Pajero diesel . The electric steering column adjustment completely died on me too. At first, I thought it was the motor, but when I took it to my regular workshop, they found it was just a faulty cable connection to the steering column motor. Got it fixed about 6 months ago, cost me around 155 Euro and they sorted it out in about 2 hours. The mechanic showed me that the cable had worn out over time and wasn't making proper contact anymore. What's your mileage and have you noticed any warning lights on the dash? Also, does it make any noise when you try to adjust it? This info would help to confirm if you're dealing with the same problem I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine is at 61540 KM and had its last service about a month ago. When I try to adjust it, there's absolutely no noise, just dead silence. Interesting that yours turned out to be just a cable issue. Did your mechanic mention if this is a common problem with these models? I'm hoping it's something simple like yours and not the entire motor unit that needs replacing. Was there any warning before it completely stopped working in your case?

Hey again! Yeah, these steering column issues can be tricky. Mine started acting up around 58000 KM, so pretty similar to your situation. Actually, now that you mention the complete silence when trying to adjust it, that's exactly how mine behaved too. No noise at all, just nothing happening. When I spoke with my mechanic, he said he's seen this issue pop up in quite a few Mitsubishis from our era. The cable wear is apparently pretty common in the 2007-2009 models. In my case, there wasn't really any warning, it was working fine one day and completely dead the next. But here's something interesting, my mechanic mentioned that the complete silence (no clicking or humming) often points to an electrical connection issue rather than a motor problem. If it was a dead motor, you'd usually hear at least a faint clicking sound when trying to adjust it. Honestly, given how similar your symptoms are to what I experienced, I'd bet you're dealing with the same cable issue. The good news is that it's way cheaper than replacing the whole motor unit. Maybe try the same workshop I used, saved me a bunch of money compared to what the dealer was quoting me! Let me know how it turns out, yeah? Always curious to hear if others have the same fix work for them.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! That's really reassuring to hear that the complete silence might actually be a good sign, pointing to a cable issue rather than a motor problem. The similarity in our mileage and symptoms definitely gives me hope that it'll be a relatively simple fix like yours. I'll definitely get it checked out this week, I've got a trusted mechanic who's pretty good with Mitsubishis, so I'll mention the cable issue to him. Really appreciate you sharing the repair costs and timeframe too, helps me know what to expect. I'll update you once I get it sorted. Thanks again for taking the time to help out!
