Cayenne Diesel CEL: Fuel Flap Sensor Issues?

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Fault stored

Check engine light on

Hey everyone, my 2012 Cayenne Diesel is acting up. Getting a check engine light and warning symbol in the instrument cluster. Based on some research, I suspect it might be related to the fuel filler flap position sensor. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual fix was at the workshop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2014 Macan Diesel last year. I've got some experience working on cars, but mostly basic maintenance stuff. The symptoms were exactly like yours, check engine light and warning symbol. Took it to my local Porsche specialist, and they diagnosed it as a defective fuel filler flap wiring harness. The repair set me back about 155€, but it fixed the problem completely. What's your current mileage? Also, have you noticed any issues with the fuel flap not opening properly? This might help me give you more specific advice based on my experience. If it's the same issue, it's a relatively straightforward fix, but definitely needs proper diagnosis first.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 26917 KM, and I just had my service done last month. Actually, I've noticed that sometimes the fuel flap feels a bit sticky when opening, but I thought it was just normal wear and tear. Based on what you're saying, it does sound pretty similar to my situation. Did your specialist mention how long the repair typically takes? I'm trying to figure out if I need to set aside a full day for this or if it's a quick fix.

Hey again! Yeah, I remember when I had this issue with my Macan. Actually, about the repair time, it was pretty quick in my case. The specialist had my car for about 2-3 hours total, and that included the diagnostic time. Not too bad at all! Since you mentioned the sticky fuel flap, that's exactly what I experienced before the warning lights showed up. In my case, the wiring harness had started to deteriorate, which caused the sensor to give false readings. That's what triggered the check engine light. Given that your Cayenne has relatively low mileage and you've just had a service, I'd definitely get this checked out soon before it potentially gets worse. My mechanic told me that these sensors can sometimes act up due to weather exposure and regular use. Quick tip from my experience, while you're waiting for the repair, just be a bit gentle with the fuel flap when opening and closing it. I found that forcing it when it feels sticky can make the problem worse. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out! Always curious to hear if others have the same fix as I did.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's really helpful to know it's just a 2-3 hour job, I can definitely work that into my schedule next week. I'll take your advice about being gentle with the fuel flap in the meantime. I've already called my local Porsche specialist and booked it in for Tuesday morning. The cost estimate they gave me was pretty close to what you paid too, so that's reassuring. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's definitely made me feel better about the whole situation. I'll update the thread once it's fixed in case anyone else runs into the same issue in the future. Thanks again!
