Camshaft sensor problems with Citroen C8 petrol engine: experience and suggested solutions wanted

Hi folks, I'm having a few problems with my Citroen C8 petrol engine from 2006. The check engine light is on, the engine switches off by itself, cold starting takes longer than normal, the engine power has dropped, the engine runs rough and sometimes the car won't start at all. I suspect that the camshaft sensor is faulty. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can give me tips on how best to get this under control? What did your garage do to fix it and what were your experiences? I look forward to your advice. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2008 Citroen C5. I'm not a car mechanic, but I know a bit about cars. The symptoms really sound like a defect in the camshaft master gear. At my garage, they replaced the master gear, which cost around €695. Since then, my car has been running perfectly again. Nevertheless, I would recommend having your vehicle checked by a specialist garage. Unfortunately, I can't give you any precise details or recommendations without exact vehicle information. So which engine do you have exactly? Year of manufacture, model etc? That would help me to give you more specific advice. I hope this helps you for now. Let me know if you need any more information!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply and the helpful insights! It could indeed be the camshaft sensor wheel! My C8 is, as mentioned, from 2006, has a petrol engine and has just over 18253 kilometers on the clock. So that's pretty low, but I only bought it recently and the previous owner probably drove rather short distances. My last inspection was a good 4 months ago. I'll probably have to do that with the garage. I really hoped it was just the sensor, because that sounds like a costly repair! But thanks again for the help! I think that gives me a good indication of what I can address with the workshop!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for! Glad to hear I was able to help you a little. Yes, your C8 still has very few kilometers on the clock, which is certainly a good thing. With that mileage, you shouldn't theoretically have to deal with the usual rust problems. On the subject of the camshaft sensor and encoder wheel: It's possible that it's only the sensor that has a problem and not the encoder wheel. But as I said, it's best to have it checked by a specialist workshop. They can also read out the fault memory and see whether the camshaft sensor is reporting a fault. And yes, unfortunately these repairs can quickly add up in price, especially on older vehicles. That's always annoying, but safety first. As for the price I quoted you: That was including labor and parts in my case. Maybe you can find a garage that will do it a bit cheaper. I hope I was able to help you a little further. Keep us posted on how things progress!

Many thanks for your support! It definitely makes sense to have the garage carry out a fault readout to see if the camshaft sensor is actually reporting a fault. I think safety should come first in this case, even if it unfortunately involves some costs. Let's see, maybe I can actually find a garage that will do the whole thing a bit cheaper! I'll definitely report back here what comes of it. Thanks again for your help!
