Boxster Overheating + Dead AC: Fan Sensor the Culprit?

Overheating

A/C System Not Engaging

Hey all, having trouble with my 2003 Boxster. Engine's running hot and the AC won't kick in. Thinking it might be the motor fan speed sensor. Has anyone dealt with this combo of issues? What did your mechanic find and how was it fixed? Really need some real-world experiences on this one.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2001 Porsche 911 last summer (I'd say I have some experience working on Porsches). The symptoms were exactly the same, engine temp rising and AC acting up. Took it to my trusted workshop, Frank's German Auto, and yep, it was the speed sensor causing all the drama. Cost me around 250€ to get it sorted (parts and labor), but it was totally worth it. The mechanic had to replace the sensor and recalibrate the system. Been running smooth ever since. Before I share more details though, could you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, has your coolant level been steady? These details would help me give you more targeted advice based on my experience. P.S. If it helps, my cousin had the same problem with his Cayman around the same time.

Thanks for the input! My coolant level is fine, and I haven't noticed any leaks. No error codes showing up yet, but the temp gauge's been creeping up higher than usual. Last service was about 3 months ago at 70583 KM and everything was good then. Been keeping an eye on it and documenting when these issues pop up. Usually happens more when I'm in stop-and-go traffic. Makes me think you might be onto something with that speed sensor diagnosis. Did your cousin's Cayman show any warning lights before things got worse?

Hey again! Yeah, thinking back to my 911's issues, it also started acting up in stop-and-go traffic just like yours. Funny enough, my cousin's Cayman didn't show any warning lights at first either, it was super sneaky like that! The symptoms just gradually got worse over time. One thing I didn't mention in my first reply, before I got the speed sensor replaced, I tried cleaning the electrical connections to the sensor (thought I could save some cash, you know?). Didn't work, but might be worth a shot for you since you're already investigating. The traffic situation you described is exactly how mine started, temp creeping up when crawling along. Total pain in the summer! Since you're at 70583 KM, you're actually in better shape than I was, mine was pushing 95000 KM when this happened. Just a heads up though, if you're gonna get it checked out, do it sooner rather than later. I waited an extra week and ended up having to deal with my car overheating in the middle of the highway. Not fun at all! And hey, if you need a good shop recommendation in your area, let me know. Oh, and make sure they check the whole cooling system while they're at it. My mechanic found a slightly corroded connector when fixing the sensor, might as well catch everything while they're in there, right?

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You're really helping me avoid a potential highway nightmare here. I'll definitely get it checked out this week, better safe than sorry, especially with these temps lately. I appreciate the heads up about the corroded connector too; makes sense to have them do a thorough check while they're at it. Think I'll skip trying to clean the connections myself though, with my luck, I'd probably make things worse! Would actually love that shop recommendation if you know any good ones in the Seattle area. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, this is exactly the kind of real-world advice I was hoping for when I posted. Will keep you posted on what they find!
