Boxster's Central Lock Nightmare: Key Fob Acting Up?

Locking/Unlocking issue

|

Key fob issues

Hey all, I'm having trouble with my 2020 Porsche Boxster's central locking system. The key fob seems unreliable, and both locking and unlocking are inconsistent. I suspect it might be related to the central locking function, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences and what repairs were needed to fix it, especially if you got it resolved at a workshop. What did they find and how did they fix it?

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 Porsche Cayman (I've got some experience working on cars, mainly basic maintenance stuff). The symptoms were exactly like yours, really frustrating with the inconsistent locking/unlocking. Took it to my local Porsche specialist, and it turned out to be a faulty cable connection in the door. Total bill came to about 155€, not cheap, but it fixed the problem completely. The mechanic had to access the door panel and replace some wiring that had worn out. What's your mileage like? Also, does the issue happen more frequently in certain weather conditions? This could help narrow down if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Drop more details about your car, and I might be able to share more specific insights from my experience!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 110366 KM, and I actually had my last service about three weeks ago. The locking issues seem to happen out of nowhere, regardless of the weather. Sometimes it works perfectly fine for a few days, then suddenly starts acting up again. Interesting that you mention the door wiring, I've noticed that the driver's side seems more problematic than the passenger side. Did your mechanic mention anything about this being a common issue with Porsches? I might take it to my local specialist to check those connections you mentioned.

Hey again! Yes, I remember helping you out with that central locking issue. After seeing your mileage and hearing about the randomness of the problem, it sounds even more similar to what I dealt with on my Cayman. You know what's interesting? My driver's side was also the main troublemaker! My mechanic actually told me this is somewhat common in the 718 platform (both Boxster and Cayman) around the 100,000 KM mark. The wiring harness in the driver's door gets the most wear and tear because, well, we use that door the most! Since my last reply to you, I've actually talked to a couple other Porsche owners at my local cars and coffee meetup, and two others had similar experiences. The unusual nature of your issue is pretty much identical to what I experienced, that on-again-off-again behavior is typically a clear sign of a wiring problem rather than the central locking function itself. Quick question, have you noticed any other electrical quirks? Like, does your mirror folding or window operation ever act up? This could help confirm if we're dealing with the same gremlin I had. I really think you should get those door connections checked out. Seems like we're definitely dealing with the same issue here!

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! Actually, now that you mention it, I have noticed my driver's side mirror sometimes takes an extra second to fold compared to the passenger side. I hadn't connected these issues before, but it makes total sense that they could be related to the same wiring problem. It's really reassuring to hear this is a known issue with the 718 platform and not just my car being weird. I'll definitely book an appointment with my Porsche specialist tomorrow to have them check the door wiring. The price you mentioned isn't too bad considering what Porsche repairs usually cost! Thanks again for sharing your experience and following up. It's been super helpful having someone who's been through the same thing. I'll update you once I get it checked out!

Let our mechanics help you!
